Hi
First post by a brand new member, here.
I'm in the early stages of a Savage build-up myself, and I'm wondering what kind of mounts you're using. My $15 Weaver Optics mounts are pretty low profile. I might get another .130 or so by going to
Ken Farrell, and getting a
one-piece mount.
They're like $72, but I spent about $750 on my rifle and stock and another $250 on my scope, so putting another 7% or so into the mix doesn't seem like that big an investment and it avoids most of the terrible screw/reciever stripping, odd alignment, short shelf-life problems that it seems like shimming can induce.
AN ASIDE:
I know this doesn't apply to you, as you're doing a parallel shim, but I'm also a bit apprehensive about shimming my 2-piece mounts to get the 15 to 20 MOA depression I want for 500 yard shooting.
The Farrell mounts already come in 15 and 20 MOA flavors, so they're looking better and better all the time. I'd have bought a 15 MOA mount already, but they have been out of stock for a while, and, until VERY recently, I've had difficulty getting a handle on the exterior ballistics of the 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. I've always been an internal and terminal ballistics kind of guy, being more involved with the explosive components, but you guys'
Point Blank software is letting me do a lot of easy-chair-and-ottoman target shooting and exterior ballistics development to help me decide on which mount to use.
I'm very glad I found this site!
