Every weekend, I try to get to the range to relax and fire a few guns. Usually I am the only person there and have the ranges to myself. It seems that most of the time I am plinking with .22 rifles or banging away with muzzleloaders. The paper targets are OK, but tend to become boring. I often plink pebbles and small stones on the backstop and see how many times I can hit and move them. Anyone else a plinker at heart? All the best...
Gil

I love plinking... I used to sit in my dads jeep parked in a field and practice shooting Sunflowers off at the stalk. I've done the shooting pebbles thing, shooting empty shotgun shells... shooting LOADED shotgun shells (place down range 50 yards and aim for the primer LOL)... umm shooting sticks off tree branches. Perhaps the coolest plinking thing is shooting full cans of cheap shaving cream... you get a great mushroom cloud Smile

Sadly civilization has about developed very fun place to shoot around me... I grew up being able to shoot right out of the kitchen door. Now its houses as far as you can see. I hope to do more plinking with the .17hmr soon though.

Gotta love .22 rimfires though, perhaps the best entertainment value per cost of about anything lately.

I just bought a new Chroney, so last weekend I was out for about 4 hours playing with it. I went through about 250 22's. It has been a long winter and spring....it was great to get back out and shoot some. I have been loading up some test rounds all winter and am anxious to get out and fire them. I wouldn't call it plinking, though, as I'll be carefully shooting and recording information. I always take my 22 along so I can use it while I let my big barrel cool.

Good post,
I like to plink with my .22 rimfire as well. I really do a lot of it on the holiday weekends when I get a chance to get out of town for the weekend.
I have a Ruger 10-22. with the stainless steel barrel. I love it, and now that the band against bannana clips has been lifted, the bannana clips are easily accessable and you can get them pretty cheep. I love to plink with the 22 rimfires as well a an old 30 carbide that my Uncle has. Very Happy

I go plinking with my five rimfires when the wind is under ten MPH and the temp is over 40 degrees. I drive to four or five areas from three to seventeen miles from home . The prairie dogs make fine plinking targets. The 10-22 T Ruger, Anschutz 1710 22 LR, Kimber 82 22WMR, CZ 452 Varmint 17 HM2, and Cooper LVT 17 HMR are fun fun plinking rifles . Last year went to the 100 Yd bench rest range to check the scopes and went out about fifety times to do some fun plinking.

Do alot of plinking here also. Started taking my 6 yearold grandson out.
Started him on my old Remington 581 22. Took him a good half box of shells before he hit his first paper target at 25 yards. After that he's managed to stay on target most every shot. Now he's another confirmed plinker, and I love it. Razz Razz

It seems like a life time ago, but we used to go to a dump out in the woods. Mostly we said we were going to shoot rats. This worked out ok when we were thinking about going deer hunting. In practice we went and shot boxes of 22 shorts. Cans, playing card, bottle tops, bottles any target of opportunity. Once and I am ashamed to say it, we found a car battery. Being good plinkers and delinquents we knew a 22 short would not satisfy our need for destruction. I took my dads 30-06 and shot it at about 25 yards. If anyone of us thought a 30-06 was light, this demonstration canceled that belief. Whoa! My memory is that the battery went about 6 feet in the air.

Any more plinking consists of shooting rabbits out of my garden, with a bow. I live in town now.

I am with GilMartin, I usually start out with paper targets , but that usually turns into plinking, especially with a 22.

If you subscribe to Col Cooper's theories, plinking is the best form of target practice.

BTW, necco wafers, the 1000 for a buck cookies make great targets.
