You may be tough, but are you - Sleep in a log, kill a deer, hack off a hind leg, cook it over a campfire, eat it with a pocketknife - tough?

Thats the way it was BEFORE man became domesticated and dare I mention soft.
I like the log, not as portable as a tent, but probably more bear resistant....

Unless the log belongs to the bear.

Trying to figure out what gun that is. Looks like a Winchester 1887.

Yes mate, unfortunately the forests have been cleared by the wood cutters to turn trees into lumber. Those were the days...not that I remember them ‘cause I wasn’t around...but I remember going camping as a child with Dad and his mate, and we were on the tail end fringe of those days...much more relaxing and enjoyable than today.

Back in the 1930’s depression, my Dad and his mate left home at about 15-16 yrs old. They didn’t use a hollow log...they built a small one room humpy using chaff bags and bark in the scrub about 200-300 metres off a river and beach where they could fish for food (first pic at spot marked). The place is Gerroa Beach NSW, about 100 or so miles south of Sydney. They spent the next 10-15 yrs of their life in this area alternating between Gerringong, Foxground, Toolijooa and Broughton Vale working on farms producing food for the war effort and the nation (second pic). I love this place and would settle there in a heartbeat.

Of course there weren’t cabins and caravans everywhere then...just bush with a bit of a clearing, with a few tents occasionally.

I'm not sure about the east coast, but the west coast still has "tall timber".

Rainier National Park has a grove of trees they call the "Grove of the Patriarchs".
That and the Redwood park are the only places I have seen trees older than Christ. I have been all over the Olympic and Cascade forests and there are a lot of trees but none of that size and age.

We still have some tall trees left in the south western part of Western Australia. There are Jarrah and Karri forests left down there today. The Jarrah isn’t so much tall as very big around the girth, but the Karri is massive tall...I believe they may be distantly related to the Californian Redwoods. The timber cutters had a reasonable approach to “mining” these forest, although I say reasonable only because they didn’t apply a “scorched earth” policy and they would replant where they had cleared. Only thing is, it takes hundreds of years for the saplings to grow into the majestic trees that were cleared for the wood chip industry.

The tree in the second pic is the Gloucester Tree which at 72m tall is the tallest climbing tree in the world. You climb it on metal rebar pegs (163 of them) driven into the side of the tree until you get to the fire lookout at the top.
