Well, I came home from lunch with the family and found one of our kayaks sitting in the ditch on the side of the road, in front of the neighbor's house. Seems someone was bold enough to go into the fenced yard with two (sorry) dogs, cars in the driveway, wife home (she was in the back of the house and ignored/didn't hear the dogs), and carry it out. Not sure why they abandoned it. Sheriff's dept was contacted and made a report. I'll be talking to the neighbors to see if anyone noticed anything.
I do know that, if they come back, they'll be met by a pissed off wife with a shotgun. And that's if they are lucky...

Kinda scary when people are that bold, makes you think drugs were the motivation. If they're hard-up for money and don't give a hoot about themselves they'll blindly steal when and where they can. Kayak though? School kids with nothin better to do? Lock things down.
Like when I moved to town and bought this house, there were people that used my yard as a short-cut. That was many years ago. Guess they were used to it. My back yard ends at the end of a cul-de-sac and regularly people would jump the fence walk the length of the yard from the back to the front and past my house to get to my street. My yard is huge too (for a city neighborhood) 1/2 acre. Not little kids either. I don't leave anything out for anybody to see or grab, save for the garden hoses. Luckily I have outbuildings for storage and stuff. At least during the day they don't do that anymore (I've done some yelling), but who knows what goes on at night.
You still have your kayak!

I keep kicking around setting up surveillance cameras at our house. I once set up a "Trail camera" in our back yard to see what comes in at night (racoons, skunks, occasional deer)... but I got a few random people wandering through at times as well! They could have easily taken the camera off and stolen it. Surveillance cameras could be mounted high up and transmit pictures inside the locked house.
I just need to research the kits more, I'd like reasonably priced cameras with great IR / night vision (those seem to be super expensive hence my not getting a system yet).
Anywho, glad they didnt make off with your kayak!

if you have a basic security light that switches on to movement it has a deterring effect to nocturnal visitors...not that Pumkins were in the dark!!!!

Surveillance systems can be surprisingly cheap. My mate bought a setup off eBay for only a few hundred dollars. Cameras are IR and one can be controlled via the Web. When the cameras are triggered, they send 3 or 4 pictures to a designated email address.
I often look after my mate's animals when they go away and he has been able to access the camera from overseas, sending me a message to wake up if I have nodded off.

Some of the high end game cameras offer a email or txt direct back to your cell phone, we had a pair of burglars identified and arrested quickly after a bloke gave us the photos, I downloaded them and then sent them out to all the staff working (We all have iPads and iPhones ) and low and behold two turkeys were cuffed and stuffed in hours…well worth the cost considering what a burglary costs you Plus the added cost of insurance

There is a security system and cameras in our near future. And I think I'll trade in the damn dog...

Well, we went on vacation for a week so I had to let this lie for a bit. It seems the mailman saw the thieves stealing the kayak so that is probably why they abandoned it. I have a description of the vehicle and I'm 90+% sure that it was a "neighbor" who had moved out about a week before the theft. That would explain why the dogs weren't a factor. I'm still asking around and passing info on to the Sheriff's Dept.
A friend was telling me about his camera system, from D-Link, so I'm looking into them. Four wireless cameras can be tied in to a recorder. Night vision, motion activated and they send you a message. Distance at night is limited but I think I can add some infrared flood lights to fix that too.
I'm told that my wish to use claymore mines is a bit excessive...

and what happens when they return fire?
It's my opinion that when you use a gun, you better be sure he/she cannot go to court afterwards...
but I'm living in a country where even the police is afraid to shoot outside the range...
