Jacket Drawstrings Can Cause Troubles

A shooter was stopped at the CAPS match Sunday just before he finished holstering after 'load and make ready' because his jacket drawstring was poised to cause an accidental discharge. If you use/carry a gun with a
similar "safety", make sure to remove all such items from your clothing and
concealment garments.

A better idea, Vince. Don't buy a handgun with a safety in the trigger like a glock. It would be nye on to impossible to set my Kimber off with a draw string caught in the trigger guard.

We (on another web site missouricarry.com) have been discussing this for a few days now.

Makes sense Bushy. I can't see the sense in a trigger mounted safety...it really isn't a safety because as soon as you finger the trigger the gun is ready to fire.

That is the exact reason I will not own a Glock. Like Bushy's Kimber,my Colt 1911 would not be effected by a situation such as this. There is obviously a reason 1911's have been around so long.

I carried a glock 22-40mm with the sheriff dept and had no problems. On the other hand they are a straight shooting and dependable weapon. For lawenforcement it is a good weapon, there is no safty that you have to fumble with if you are forced into a quick draw and fire situation.

That's definitely something to keep in mind. My M&P 9 has a similar safety to the glock.

Training deficiency, complanency, lack of forethought in clothing design and the shear numbers of glocks in service were guarenteed to highlight any self injury by police/armed forces.
Any firearm has the potential to bite you in the bum if you dont follow your training. How many have shot themselves with the "unloaded" firearm?
Improve training and remove complanency, the only answer.

Call me very old fashioned, but I predicted this problem when they first cam out. Right...There are a lot of them out there, but so are 1911 style handguns and you don't hear of them shooting people in the leg or elsewhere.

The deputy's I know up here refer to this as "Glock leg". Obviously the problem is well known.

I would postulate that putting your finger on the trigger as you begin to draw the firearm, especially as the safety is on the trigger is the major cause of UD's and glock leg. On the other hand how many have been saved by the draw point and shoot capability without fumbling with safetys?
Now we're back full circle to training and competency, which would need to be monthly for everyone that carries not just the ones on the street all the time, not a 1/2 day every year.

I have to agree Pete...nothing beats solid regular training with regular confirmation of the training to help alleviate poor handling issues.

In hand with the training must go a common sense approach to the type of items issued to those that carry the Glock as part of their job.

I sure like my Firestar M43, Colt Series 80 (modified) 1911 and my Kimber UCC II.

And there is NO tuperware in my gun safe.

I agree 100% with you, like you say training and competency are the key.
However flipping the safety on a pistol is just part of both training and competency. It becomes muscle memory.

We are probably going to have to agree to disagree here. I am sure Glocks are a fine weapon in the right hands but I still believe the 1911 that has been around for a very long time is superior.

Lets stoke up the campfire and drink Vinces beer.
