Seems we may be taking another step in the right direction here. The laws need to allow you to carry in your vehicle, even on company property where weapons are otherwise banned. It doesn't do me much good to if I can't defend myself going to and from work, etc.

Concealed means concealed, Mike. There must be a lot of handguns in postal parking lots around this whole country. Especially when Missouri allows us to keep a loaded handgun in our vihicles without a permit to carry.

There are lots of weapons in places that it is currently either illegal or against company policy. But what happens if it is illegal to have a weapon in the parking lot and you have an incident in the parking lot where you have to draw a gun? What happens if it is against your employer's rules to have a weapon on the property and you get involved in an incident as you are leaving the property? In the first case you've committed a crime and in the second you're at least going to get fired. I'm all for anything that removes those penalties.

On your first one of selfdefence in the parking lot. You have to be alive to be prosecuted.

On the second one. If you don't have the weapon on your person, but in the center counsel and have an accident. Who's to know?

As long as the gun is properly stored in your car it is not on the company's property - it is IN your property.

If you have to use it in the parking lot then the loss of your job is going to become a minor concern.

What happens if you follow the rules and don't carry your gun into the workplace and you get assaulted and injured - is it the company's responsibility for your lack of ability to defend yourself? Are they therefore liable for your injuries? If they don't protect you can you sue them for breach of contract (implied or expressed)?

I had a boss that told me I couldn't carry at work and I asked if he and his business would be liable for my protection... he stammered for a second and then said he didn't think anything would happen. I pointed out that they had had a break-in in the early morning hours less than three months earlier in which a female employee had been tied up and the safe robbed - people started to get to work and he left her in the chair. I left that employer for another that allowed concealed carry - and most of us did. Some of us even went shooting together on weekends.

This always seems to pop up. I think it was Wisconsin that recently ruled that (as Paul mentioned) having a concealed weapon in your vehicle was not a violation of an employer's rules. I'm sure there are other states that use the same principle.

I've heard of and know of particular situations of people losing their jobs for having firearms in their vehicles at work.......never have I heard of jobs being restored because it was technically in their property !!!

My place of employment has security and has provisions in place to keep the work place secure from outside influence. Most businesses have structured plans through HR departments that deal with work place violence. This is how they justify violating my/our rights.

SSL........I think it was Oklahoma that started this precedent when some fired workers challenged it federal court. The outcome of that case has led to most states enacting or trying to enact parking lot legislation.

Could have been. I was thinking it was Wisconsin since it only recently got concealed carry, but you may be right.

Well fellers, all I can tell you is that here in NC my company prohibits ALL weapons from the property. No guns, bows, etc., period. They even put out messages before hunting season to remind people that we can't have our hunting weapons in the car. We tried to pass changes in the law to allow weapons inside locked vehicles but naturally the politicians mucked that up. As for being alive to be prosecuted, that's what I say too. It would still be a bitch to be arrested for otherwise legally defending yourself with a weapon you weren't supposed to have.

Law has been passed...now just waiting for details. Applications probably won't be available for 6 months yet and the instructor I prefer is trying to get details about instructor certification before they can start training. Supposed to be 16 hours with maybe 4 waived if you have a Utah permit (as I do). Range time is mandatory and the range has to be certified too. Wish I could just use mine!

They sure put a lot of stumbling blocks in the way just to prove you can handle your firearm. I bet you will only be able to carry just one firearm and it will have to be the one you qualified with. Pick carefully.

The range has to be certified? Hell! The deputy sheriff took us behind a building and had targets set up in front of a mound of dirt and turned us loose.

Made my pick. Kahr CW45. Not a 1911, my preferred weapon, but small, very light and accurate once I got used to the DAO trigger. Been without a malfunction for 800 rounds.
