Again a reminder of what can happen when folks do not follow the basic rules of gun safety. The link will take you to a site where a man literally blew his shoulder off! Pics are graphic..

If you pick up a firearm that was not under your immediate control..............
1) Consider it as being loaded
2) Point it in a safe direction
3) Keep your finger away from the trigger
4) Open the action and make sure that it is empty
Than prove it before you use it....
1) Point it in a safe direction
2) remove all the cartridges if any ( mags etc.)
3) open the action and check the chamber
4) verify the feeding path (like on pumps or lever actions)
5) than check the bore to make sure that it is not obstructed
Also make sure that you use the proper cartridge caliber as indicated on the firearm
Than have fun

It could have been worse.
With the level of training as a marine and a cop, you would have though the SILwould have been able to accomplish a simple UNLOAD. What did he do in the marines, lift heavy things?
A very good if graphic lesson indeed..
Stay safe.

Lots of little bits, what a mess, at least it wasn't his head in the way, but darned close to it. I won't keep my gun loaded in the truck when I'm deer hunting any more, what's a lost deer compared to a lost arm, leg or what ever.
