Reminds me of Japanese abuse of girls during and after WWII. This sort of abuse seems to be recognized as some sort of cultural event, surprisingly accepted by the culture of the ruling military. My observation, not an excuse. Not unlike raping and pillaging their enemy, they do it to their own people in a sort of 'that's what soldiers do' way. Just another reason for the rest of us to be the policemen of the free world.

The way I read it Suz, it seems that it is not just the military...it seems to be the domain of the upper class...the ruling class if you like.

It seems to be a socially accepted activity amongst the upper class males...accepted by them, but certainly not by the rest of humanity.

Whichever way...it is totally unacceptable in our society and any reasonable minded person would feel the same way. Raping and pillaging, especially children, is a low mongrel act perpetrated by low mongrels who do not deserve to breathe the earth's oxygen.

What needs to be remembered is that the huge majority of Afghan citizens want nothing more than to get on with their lives without fear of either the Taliban or their own rulers.
THOSE are the ones worth the effort.
You have to remember that the abusers & criminals are a tiny minority & they're newsworthy whilst some poor sod trying to run a furniture business isn't worthy of a single column inch.
