What brand of "flipups" are they? Never had a problem with the Butler Creek ones on the .30-06.

Reason why I ask is that I have to get down and dirty to wrestle mine off so I can check for corrosion under them. Once on and positioned they don't move and have no efect with the adjusting ring.

Front one fits over a tapered hooded objective bell. So it "kicks" off the end due to same, lil double-stick tape works. Rear one has indexing teeth that fit in/on/over the focus ring and the spring in it is proly not too strong so as to allow it to flap under recoil. Not a huge issue. I can proly pull the pin from the hinge and shim it to add friction, tweak the spring etc.

Quit messin' around and spend a few extra bucks and get a set of Butler Creek flipups.

I did modify mine a bit. That's why they swing so far forward. But I did it for a different reason. I was trying to get a lower profile over the top of the scope. With some success I might add.

My personal favorites are the "flip-up" covers ... I have trajectory, windage and "click" information taped to the inside of the rear ones

Great idea except how does that work with a variable powered scope?

The rear cover is on the ocular, or focusing, part of the scope. Once that is properly set up it is seldom necessary to adjust further. All of my scopes have a separate ring forward of that for power adjustment. If you are refering to objective adjustment for parallax by means of the front lens, I install the cover with the parallax adjustment set to my "zero" distance which leaves plenty of room to adjust (at least on my scopes) without the flipped-up cover interfering with the barrel.

Fit can be a minor issue, but on those scopes that just happen to fall between sizes for the covers, I just get the next larger size and make enough wraps of black plastic electrician's tape to make it a snug fit. The cover body conceals the tape as long as you don't get too generous with it.

Vince: Feel free to "steal" anything you want. I got the idea from seeing trajectory charts taped to rifle stocks. I didn't like the look or the fact that you have to pull the rifle completely out of position to read it, so decided the cover lid was ideal. I doubt if I'm the first to think of that, but it sure is handy for me.

Now that is what my uncle (rest his sole) taught me. Take a bike inner tube, cut it the length of your scope, slice it, sow or staples the end, and cover your scope. Protects the lenses from rain and debris, quicker to pull off than opening two caps, and no big deal if you loose it in the excitement.

This is one of those subjects that's fun to argue about (in a friendly way of course). Using the inner tube (which really does make sense and is cheap) you lose the see-through issue we started with. Pulling that thing off of your scope will take a whole lot more time than the flip-up caps too. My Butler Creeks happen to position the rear release right above my right thumb while the front cover's tab is right by my left thumb. No fuss and no excess movements, just a flick of each thumb...and very fast. If you've ever tried to remove one that is properly fitted, you will soon see that chance of accidentally losing one is pretty remote.

And I'm sure the debate will continue! Very Happy

Yes, I have used shoot-thru scope covers for the first time last year.

It gets cold hunting in the Rockies and I hate fumbling around with flip-ups - trying to get the d_m things off when I have an elk spotted. Those elk don't wait around for me. Those covers were clear - didn't hurt my shot.

The brand is called Shoot-Thru - got them at the Tanner Gun Show last year in Denver. The guy had a booth and I was able to have a good chat with him. He knew his stuff - hunted all his life. So, I tried them - what the heck. They worked great for me, I like them. To each his own..........
