I have read the items here about the many different and varied calls that you guys use to call in coyotes.
My question is: Can the calls be used on feral dogs...dogs that have cross bred with native critters or have just gone feral? If the can be used, how successful are they?
The closest I can come to hunting coyotes is feral dogs and dingos here in Australia. The dingos are a fair distance from me, but feral dogs are much nearer. Have to get amongst them and thin the ranks a bit.
Cheers, Vince

I would not think that the canines down under would be less likely to come to a distress call or speak a totally different language. I would give it a shot. Listen to the sounds they make and try to imitate them.

Howdy Vince,
I agree with Dawgdad, "I would give it a shot".
I’ll bet a rabbit in distress would be a good choice. Over the years, I have called several feral dogs and cats using rabbit distress sounds.
We don't have dingo’s here. Are they pack hunters? When calling predators we are trying to sound like a easy meal. One thing I would be really concerned about is calling solo and having a hungry pack come in. Getting ate could sure ruin your day.

Yep, 'Vince on the Barbie' doesen't sound like fun. Always use caution when hunting wild dogs.
Predators will come to calls as will the hogs. Hogs come to piglet in distress calls and feeding calls. The dingos and wild dogs should answer up to distress calls of rabbits and mice (rats, moles, etc). And, give cat and kitten calls a try too. My cat tracked me to the deer stand one day and howled at the bottom of the tree when she lost the scent trail. She called in a doe that was curious and nervious about the sound the cat made. The doe blew and stomped the ground scaring the cat and she climed the tree and found me. The doe continued to blow and finally left. |
Vince on the barbie....that would be a bad thing. Dingos don't run in packs like wolves, although they will usually be in at least pairs. They will hunt and kill a person....had a boy about 10yr old killed a couple of years back, and of course our most famous case, the Chamberlain baby taken by a dingo while asleep in a tent years ago.
I think I will have to track down some calls and give them a try. The idea of using a hog call sounds good. Where I hunt (going out there next week) the pigs are fairly small...at most the size of an average dog....and they can be very hard to find. A call might be just what "Doctor Weatherby" ordered.
Rabbit in Distress calls would bring most of our feral predators in I think....fox, cat, dog etc.
Thanks for the advice guys, I am certainly going to give them a try.
Cheers, Vince

Just a thought but would you like to construct your own MP3 player caller. You can get the parts at any electonics store. Do you have Radio Shack down under? Then you could download some sounds off of the internet and play them on your player/caller. I'm looking for the link to the sounds in my bookmarks now. If you have a boom box that uses cassete or cd's that would work too. Just throw some camo net over it to hide the box.

Sound downloads. These are free to download and use for non commercial use.
Calling Sounds - Free Downloads
You will find the the piglet call on the first page along with bobcat kittens and dog pups. All of these are good calls.
If you can bait your hogs try some old cooking oil poured over corn or dry dog food. They also have a sweet tooth and like any sweet syrup. Pour it on a stump or log.
Even though your hogs are small be cautious of the tusks, they are razor sharp and they know how to use them. Where the little ones are there is a big mama and a bore too. When setting up a bait site plan your setup spot downwind of the bait and it is good to have your back to a tree that you can climb

Chris, we have Tandy Electronics who are Radio Shack in the US. Good idea to build an MP3 player...will have to investigate what is required.

Gidday Chet, thanks for that mate. The page wouldn't come up...say it couldn't be found. Most likely unavailable at the moment. Will have a look at it later.

Vince, when you practice the distress calls if you make all the neighbors plug their ears and wince, you are doing it right! Put some emotion into it. but remember the lungs on the animal you are imitating is about the size of your thumb. Short blasts are in order to be realistic. The MP3 downloads are helpful to listen to while practicing you mouth calls.

One more thing,(while I shamelessly boost my post total) when I have a coyote coming in to a call, I generally will switch to a lip squeak to coax them into killing range. Pinch your lips over your teeth and suck air in through a small space in the front of you lips and make a high pitched squeak. This way I can have both hands on the .243
