I was in a gun shop scanning the used gun racks and saw two M1 Garands and both were overpriced. One had a sanded stock and a slick glass-like finish more suitable for a honor guard weapon. The other was still original, was made by Harrington & Richardson in 1955 and looked like new. I haggled a good bit and took the H&R. I paid too much, but rifles in this condition are getting hard to find and command even high prices. All the best...

Yup, I seen one at a gunshop up north, it was a 1944 springfield M1 Garand 30/06 still original going for $2400.00.

Congrats, Gil! How many other M1s do you have?

I just looked at the CMP web site and they have them from $525 to $995 depending on grade. The really nice (special grade) ones have new stocks, new barrel and sling.
Not a bad price for what ya get.

I was lucky enough to get my CMP (then DCM) Garand for $185 back in 1988.
I am considering getting one of the Special grade for $1000... big difference..

slimjim,
I have a Springfield M1 that I got back in 1969 for $79. I picked up another Springfield M1 in 1991 for $339. Last year I got another Springfield M1 for $700 less a discount. I paid the same for this H&R M1. I see a cost inflation pattern here. All the best...

P.S. I am custodian for 8 M1 Garands that our gun club got from the CMP decades ago. One has a serial number in the 20,000 range and is never fired. We also have an M1 made by International Harvester that is also never fired. I am the only one who has the combination to our gun safe.
