Howdy. Was lookin for opinions. I have always wanted a 308 Norma Mag and with my income tax refund this year I think I'm gonna get one Very Happy . There's a rem mod 721 ( rechambered to 308 norma) thats bin at a local shop for quite a while now. The stocks crap and the blueing isn't the greatest , but apears to be in decent shape other wise but the the shop can't tell me anything about it's history ( witch bother's me a litle ) for $275.00. So this is one choice my other choice is to buy a used savage 110 in 30/06 and take to a local smith who will rechamber it for me for $65.00. I want to have a muzzle break installed as well. Not sure witch way to go Just looking for opinions.
Joe

Oh He++...Jack. You talk about everyone...I go with Joe...If I had a 300 Winchester magnum I might use a muzzle brake...I will agree with you if it is a .30-06 and below though...I don't know Joe...If you want that much speed out of a .30 calibre why not go with the Winchester .300 Magnum or the Weatherby .300 magnum...Two much more common chamberings (proven too) and easier and cheaper to get supplies and components...And put a "muzzle brake" on Jack instead... Very Happy Fencing Cheers

.30-338...Hummm, but not as popular...Might be a "trend"...A yuppy thing...

Jack...I honestly believe that any of the .30 calibres can not be a mistake...The .30 calibres have proven that they "can do" in any or most situations. Hard to beat...Still not sold on the .308 though...

I'd rather have a 35 whelen or 338-06 than a 308 norma. JMHO

Cool 721 eh, would be a nice addition to the collection but if you were looking for something more user friendly go with the SAVAGE!

I now have 4, 2 - M10s and 2 - M110s. By just changing the bolt heads you can change to any cartridge, the 10s are for the short rounds and the 110s for the standard legnth rounds ie, 270.30-06 etc and also the standard magnums, 7MM Rem, 300 Win, 338 Win etc.

I have one set up as a switch barrel in .260 Rem, .308 Win & .358 Win. Having 4 actions/stocks my only cost for a new rifle if I want one is the cost of a barrel. This really keeps the cost down. Haven't had one yet that will not shoot under an inch and most under 3/4" (5 rounds). Plus they are fun to play around with! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Howdy Jack. ya brass is a little pricey $57.00 for fifty through cabelas and $46.00 for the dies. I hear you can use 338 brass( Speer maunal #12) and run it through the die/trim and supose to work well but I will buy Norma brass for it. The guy has two 721s the one I mentioned and one in 270 for $325.00 As far as the brake I don't feel I'm real sensitive to recoil but I plan on spendin a lot of time at the range with it and the brake should make it more enjoyable.

Bushmaster. The balistics on the 308 norma and the 300win mag are very close and the 300 weatherby is a nice round but as you said they are more common and thats exactly why I want to go with the 308 Norma just want something that everybody doesen't have Very Happy
Joe

I think the way of the Savage (again not you Joe:-D ) is the way to go. You can surely make one hell of a shooter with that 721......But pound for pound, dollar for dollar, you'd be savin $$$ to buy more brass and maybe even a nice lighted reticle Burris Mr. Green Cheers

Howdy 10ring I'm thinkin on goin that way I might be able to get the 721 for a little cheaper than $275.00 and it's already rechambered but i would have to get a new stock and not knowing the history on it realy bother's me. I don't no what used 110s are going for but I can probably get one fairly cheap in good shape with a snythetic stock and then get her rechambered and a brake installed. I am gonna get a Leupold VX1 4-12 with the new ( long range duplex ) and throw on it should be a nice set up when it get's finished.
Joe

Used 110's in my area go for around $150-$250, of course depending on style, caliber, and such. And the rechambering should be able to be done for a very reasonable price on a Savage....Then plus, a piece of mind goes along with it because you did it, and you know what is, has, and will be done there on. The 721 however, well......if it were me, i'd take a good hard look at every screw, nut, and bolt, as well as hack marks, barrel line with chamber, then having the smith at the store take off the stock so you can inspect it further (should only cost $5 to $10 for his time if he's expensive).

I'm just very attentive to someone else making what could have been a failed project, that was just put together to shoot, and not properly set up. I have honestly seen a good 50%+ of guns/rifles that people have tried to (or had someone else try to for them) halfass smith and attempt to sell. Extreme cases i talk about just may be that, but with that caliber, model, and availability of parts (non custom) i think you should either reconsider, or offer $100 less since it's been worked w/o papers.
