well now.....way back in 1800 and nuts n bolts a whole bunch of horis from Taranaki regieon got their arses kicked in what was known as "the musket wars" some tribes had muskets and they slaughtered those who didnt...anyway these fellas jumped in their wakas and set off on a rather long journey to a place known as the chatham islands..when they arrived they were half staved,sick and dying..the locals from Chathams..the moriori took them in,and nursed them back to health. now the Moriori had given up the waring lifestyle..they didnt do the war thing anymore,and it cost them dearly,those horis from the mainland decimated their hosts,they seperated the womanfolk for themselves and sytematically whiped out the entire species

which is where this is relevant..they were made to dig the hungi pits,heat the stones,prepare the veges,then whacked on head and dropped into the food baskets.
