Only IR works on heat Elvis...all other NVG works on amplifying the ambient light. Its surprising just how much late generation NVG can amplify just starlight.

Active IR or Thermal and passive or ambient like Vince says. To really flog this horse here is a very short description AN/PVS4, AN/TAS, AN/TVS5, AN/GRC106, AN/GRA, AN/GRY26 translates to
AN = Army Navy/
PVS4 = Passive (ambient) Vision Sight (type)4
TAS = Thermal (active IR) Acquisition Sight (type)5 this is usually crew mounted
GRC106 = Ground Radio Communications (voice) (type106)
GRA = Ground Radio Data
GRY26 = Ground Radio Y (Secure) (Type26)

Most of the NATO nations and the 5 eyes military guys and gals will recognize this. Ta Da Very Happy

I remember the first time I used the AN/PVS4A night sight when I was in the Army. Had it mounted on an M16...it was massive and the image, whilst reasonable came nowhere near the latest (then) Generation NVG we had in the Aussie Army 10 years later. It was absolutely brilliant, but using just one "monocular" made life interesting...no real depth perception, so it was common to bounce off trees regularly. I got into the habit of going to ground to the side of trees then adjusting my position as necessary.

I remember back in 1982 I was on exchange with the British Army and we had a play with their IR sighting system they used on their TOW missiles mounted on 432 APC. There was a wee lassie walking across a park some distance away and damned if she wasn't for all intensive purposes naked when viewed through the sighting system. Her body was just a brilliant red profile with clothing etc not visible.

That, more than anything, bought home to me just how vulnerable we were to any active IR system. You could even identify the number and type of vehicles that had parked in a paddock an hour or more after they had actually left, and even under cover, a soldier was no longer hidden. Our cam nets were supposedly treated to stop IR...but they can't treat the gaps between the cam...you still stick out a mile...a bit like dogs nuts in a crowd.

If you are going for hunting then choose a peace place where nobody can disturb

Good luck with that these days. Most decent hunting areas are pretty much well known.
