I tried some new 30-30 win 160gr Evolution yesterday. Wow what a difference a pointed tip makes. I tried these in my Mod. 94, 30-30 and shot some good groups. I just had one box and I was sighting a new scope too. But I had 2" groups at 100yds. Could never come close with the old round nose ammo. They feed good through my lever action and seemed to be more accurate. They claim that at 100 yd. +3.0" at 200yd. 0.2" and at 300yd. -12.1". not bad for a brush gun.

How do pointed tip cartridges work in tube feed guns?

That's what there made for, They seem to work fine in mine, I had one time that it jammed up, but the rest of the box worked fine.

I mean I thought you arent supposed to use pointed ammo in a tube feed because the point of 1 round sits against the primer of another... and can potentially cause chain reaction detonation... one round fires, into the primer of another firing it... etc etc.

Just curious

Go to www.hornady.com/shop/?...revolution and click on more info.

I haven't used or seen any but from what I understand the bullet has a rubber tip so as not to detonate the primer it butts up to.

I was reading the info on these before I ordered my last box of 150 grain Sierra flat nose bullets for my 30/30. The theory seems sound, but I wanted to hear if anyone had tried them before I bought a box for reloading.

Pretty neat idea. It improves the BC of the bullet while being safe for a tube feed magazine. Better living through chemistry! Very Happy

They do not plan to market them for the reloader any time soon. Factory only. If I want a pointed bullet or feel the need to change my "Jack Handle" to a mid range weapon (that's what I have a .30-06 for) I'll load my own and hand chamber the pointed one and back it up with flat nosed rounds. I have done some experiments with this idea with some good results, but did not pursue it as my A-bolt could be down loaded to meet this need.

In my (not so)humble opinion this is a sales gimmick to try to keep .30 calibre lever rifle owners that can't shoot beyond thier noses without a scope. The .30-30 Winchester or Marlin need no improvements to do what they were designed to do in this modern world. 100 +/- yard shots and in a fast manor (snap shots). And they (Mod 94 & mod 336) do it well...

DallanC, check your PM's.

The bullet has a polymer tip protecting the primer in front. It works quite well. I've shot a couple of boxes each in a 30-30 and a .35 Rem and they are quite accurate in both rifles. The trajectory is very close to what Hornady says it is. Haven't killed anything with them this year, but others report that terminal ballistics are very good.

They add at least 50-75 yards to the effective range in the calibers for which they are produced, which is good in my book. Where they really shine is in the new XTR rifles with the longer barrels.

I'm sold on them and that's all I intend to use in my lever guns until something better is produced. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I agree with Bushy, plus the .30-30, .35 rem and .45-70 etc ammo just doesn't look right pointed. IMHO. Shocked Very Happy

Hutch, I agree, why not use technology to your own benefit. I'll be using these as they do improve the lever action rifles accuracies and range, which I think is a good thing. Factory loads have came a long way and I don't have any problem using factory loads in all my guns. But that's just me. wtf

I don't know about any of you but I'm relutant to put any pointed ammo even if its tipped with marshmellows inside a lever action. I guess I've heard the no pointed ammo in lever actions (execpt the Winchester M1895s ofcourse) so much that I just cant think of putting in a pointed bullet in a tubular magazine. Smile

Mind you I've always wanted to get a lever action just to shoot proper lever action loads (black powder with a lead cast bullet) in it and hunt deer at ranges of less then 75 yards with a 30 or 32 WCF. Hiding

I don't know if I will ever load any of the new bullets in my 45-70. I use it mostly for Elk hunting, and the area I hunt Elk in, one can't see much more then 100 - 150 yrds.

I think I have to agree with you. Even though the theory looks good, it would still make me uneasy not using flat nose. Also, it's not like the 30-30 is a 300 yard gun anyway, within 125 yards it prints pretty good even with flat nose bullets. It's a great 100 yard caliber so trying to stretch it out much farther really isn't the best of ideas IMHO.

Oh come on guys Live a little, take a chance. LOL. I suppose you all still use a flint lock for your black powder rifles too. I just brought this new ammo up because I've tried it and am impressed. You don't have to use it, I just thought you might want to improve those old lever action rifles. When I'm hunting I owe it to the game I'm hunting to use the best, most accurate ammo in my gun that is available. I guess that's why I use an In line ML with pyradex pellets and a saboted bullet. as for the round nose ammo for your lever action rifles, I see deeper dents in the primers from them than I did with the new stuff.
