Lets talk about a favourite subject..... FOOD.

Ok, What do you guys bring with you for bush tucker during your hunting?

For a while, whenever I went to the bush, I carry cans and bread and whatever snacks in the esky.
I eat whatever I grab first (or whatever looks more appetizing) are usually consumed earlier
and usually at the end of the trips, the picking are slim indeed..

So, last month I bought myself a vacuum sealer and made my own (something like) MRE.
I calculate the energy values to be about 2200 calories spread into breakfast, snacks, lunch and dinner.

Quite nice packs made of pre mixed cereal for breakfast
, instant noodle for lunch and dinner, with a can of tuna to add into the bigger meals (with empty zip lock for storage after the can is opened),
and a few muesli bars and candy for snacks, a bag of instant coffee and a tea bag.

Did anybody do the same?
how does it work for you?
what do you carry?

Well, when my mate and I go hunting we actually sit down and plan the trip at least a week before heading out...this includes meals.

Prior to going we purchase BEER, RUM or premixed Rum and Ginger Beer in cans, single serve packs of breakfast cereal, bread, butter, nibbly type snacks (nuts, dried fruit etc), coffee, teabags, milk, eggs, cheese, ketchup and bbq sauce and soft drinks (sodas). Just before we leave the last town there is a particular roadside fruit and vege shop we vist where we buy fresh locally grown spuds, onions, tomato and fruit in season. We also buy meat the day before leaving...usually a few snags (sausages), some seasoned rissoles (meat patties), bacon and a couple of decent waygu steaks. All meat is vacuum sealed in meal size packs for two people. We always have some sort of non perishable canned food in the hamper as well. Last time we went out, the mate decided to try some dehydrated meals he came across in a camping store...quite nice and filling...but expensive.

Also, before leaving home we fill two 20 litre water jerries and the water tank on the vehicle.

Breakfast - Cereal and coffee.

Lunch - depends what we are doing. In camp it will usually be a sandwich or tomato and onion jaffle as well as tea or coffee, or a goffa (soft drink).

Tea - Fire up the pig or put the barbie plate over the fire and cook up a good meal. Steak and or snags/rissoles and bacon on the hotplate, spuds wrapped in foil and into the hot coals, tomatos and mushrooms on the hotplate, usually a couple of eggs as well. Maybe some canned fruit for dessert then tea or coffee.

Supper - nibbly stuff and a few beers or rums...AFTER hunting of course.

We always have a ready supply of soft drinks and water in the fridge (solar and battery operated) that we drink during the day along with the beer for that night.

All rubbish goes into plastic garbage bags and we cart it out with us and drop it in the first available industrial bin...usually at a Petrol Station.

If the urge takes us we are not above tucking into a nice rabbit backstrap or two or bunny drumstick. Prefer to slow cook the rabbit in a camp oven though...makes a magnificent stew or casserole, but it cooks ok on the hotplate as well.

Both the mate and I are ex soldiers and have roughed it plenty. These days we firmly believe that any mug can be uncomfortable in the field, but all it takes is a little bit of fore thought and planning to be nice and comfortable and enjoy the experience. Very Happy Very Happy

Cheers, Vince

All my hunting so far has been day trips so I just toss a few snack bars and something to drink (water or sport drink) in the shoulder bag I use.

Vince, thats exactly what I have been doing before.
And usually either we got way too much, that we got to dedicate an esky to bring them back,
or way too lean and we sort of starve or fight for the last bar of muesli.
with prepacked MRE, I could eat the same everyday, and I could bring just enough that an esky is not required for trip back,
thus space for more meat brought home.

Pumps, down here in the smoke stacks, it usually took up to 5 - 8 HOURS trip before you can get to a good hunt place.
Often I wish I live near the bush, but jobs for my skill is rare in the bush Sad

Never any shortage of space to bring back what we shoot mate. But, you are right, we do live well when we go away...remembering that when we go it is usually for a minimum of three days.

When we leave home on a hunting trip our cabin on wheels (33' travel trailer) is well stocked with food and beverage !!!

Some things are prepared in advanced, some is frozen and some is nice and fresh from the butcher.

When going to the woods we usually spend the day so we pack some sandwiches or whatever leftovers from the night before along with candy bars and water.

All of my hunts are from a camp. I usually don't take anything except maybe water depending where I am. Most places I hunt have clean streams to drink from. Eat before I leave camp and eat again when I return to camp.

I don't go very far any more so I don't really have to pack anything but water and a few granola bars, maybe an orange or apple.

sounds lame

tea/dinner is usually savaloys noodles dehi spuds and veges.

Gelandangie...The last hunting camp I was in I had bacon, eggs and coffee for breakfast with hash browns/w tabasco sause for a change.

Lunch consisted of a meat sandwich chases with a beer. At this time I prepared my dinner. Depending on whether it was stew with elk cubes or a steak marinated in my beer and herbs marinate.

Dinner was one of the above. If it was the steak it was served with steamed & buttered veggies, steamed & mashed potatoes with the beer herbs and blood made into a gravy. A good red table wine was for the clensing of the pallat. Finished with a favorite pipe full of my favorite tabacco. All of the above food is prepared over an open fire. I AM a camp fire gourmet cook. I have other dinning treats along with Salmon Ala Selbee and Trout Almondeen.

Then it was nighty-night in my four man tent all to myself. A two inch foam pad and a comfy sleeping bag and pillow on one side and my gear on the other side of the tent.

Yup...I DO rough it when I go to hunting camp.

If you think I'm going to suffer when my pickup and tent are in the same place, you ARE NUTS!!!
