That is what the process of removing the factory primer pocket crimp is called. And also the bullet forming process.

basically swagging is squeezin the BEEP out of something and make it stay in the finished form.

Military cartridges have a ring around the primer pocket, thus make it quite impossible to put in a new primer easily. Swagging tools such as one beautifully made by Dillon use a ram to squeeze this ring back into the shell.

A common operation, to swage soft lead core into copper (or such) jacket thus enabling soft expand-able lead to be shot at high velocity without the risk of melting lead fouling the bore.

Swagging Matilda is nice provided that it is consensual.. Then again this is a subject of another topic. Love

Well done Guts...forgot about that, good pickup mate.

Phill, if you are using ex military brass, and some factory brass, you will find that the primer is most likely swaged in. You can tell this by the depressed ring around the primer pocket.

They can be a real bugger to decap and the primer pocket needs the crimp removed before repriming.

Cheers, Vince

No mate...offers no more strength. Simply ensures that the primer does not move backwards or come out in a military weapon.
