Remington 700 SPS Varmint Trigger

A Little Off Topic. but out of curiosity how do you overall like that gun?

shooting wise, you cant beat the price i was looking into one. Thanks

Dimitri, you may want to rethink that strategy. Remington, in 2008 came out with a new model of the 700 called the 700 VTR, for Varmint Tactical Rifle. The barrel on the VTR is of an unusual profile. I have some contacts on the inside, and they are telling me that the barrel is so much more accurate than the standard varmint barrels that Remington applied for a patent on it. They sell for a little more than an SPS Varmint here in the Lower 48. They also put a new trigger on it which is a derivative of the 40X trigger.

I would buy one today, except that I am tapped out from buying the XR100.

I'd have consider it but I want the "precision" rifle to be chambered in 30-06Spring. Smile

I do believe the VTR is a short action rifle.

Yes that 700VTR would be a nice rifle to own but I just spent my gun money for the year yesterday. I've heard good things about that rifle.

I've put maybe 30 rounds through my VTR in .223 so far. It hasn't been any more, or less, accurate than other .223s I've shot. I haven't obviously tested enough to find a favorite load so that could change.

R&D up at Ilion uses the green & gold box premium line for their testing. It is actually pretty good ammo, being on par with Black Hills Match.

Yes, the VTR is short action.

I have considered a project like you are thinking of. In order to get it precise, you will have to blueprint the action. Will you be doing this yourself? You will need a 4-jaw chuck on your lathe, and the setup will take a while. Also, you will need a jig for truing the bolt face. I also recommend that you replace the factory extractor and use an AR15 style extractor. It is superior to even the Sako type extractor.

You should end up with an awesome platform. I really like the 30-06 so much better than the 308Win, because of its versatility and horsepower. And it is every bit as accurate as its little brother regardless of what the short powder column theorists say.

No will have a proper gunsmith blueprint the action when the time comes. Smile

I am not really considering a Sako or AR-15 style extractor on the rifle, mainly because of the risks if the round causes a over pressure condition, I've read that it turns into shrapnel. Shocked

I've heard of recomendations for a Sako or AR style exrtractor for the 700 bolt from time to time over the years.

Gotta say I don't understand it. All my hi-powers are 700's or variants of it. I've never had a extractor problem nor have I ever ran into anyone who has. Only ever talked to one guy who had the conversion. The only explanation he could give me was, his gunsmith said to do it so he did. He too never had a problem but because the smith said to do it.....................

So what am I missing ??????

And please don't tell me about a top shooter who won something because of it. I'd rather hear about factual based info.

Want factual information just look at the M24 Sniper rifle being fielded by the US Army when it was being developed they looked at using a Sako/AR extractor but the liklyhood of having a problem with the Remington extractor which made the other ones so much "better" wasn't as bad as the consideration for the possibility of a possibility caused by a primer blow out from a over pressured round (ether over loaded or cause it got too hot), that the US Army decided it wasn't worth it. Smile

Thats why I decided agisn't it. The cost of the conversion is very little before someone says the US Army buys from the "lowest bidder", just the "3 rings of steel" that push feed actions enjoy sealing the round when fired between the bolt and barrel without "gas" ports like Mauser actions is a safety feature you remove by installing a Sako/AR extractor. Confused

As for the current trend, its not a "tactical" rifle if it doesn't have a Sako or AR style extractor installed. If you look around most if not all "Tactical" or "Military" or "Sniper" M700 based rifles have them now. Its not "Tac-cool" without one. Nuts

I guess I'm the rare one with an extractor problem in a 700. I'm supposed to ship the bolt to a Remmy authorized service center for inspection and service. Problem is I use the damn gun year round (it's my .243, my "go to" gun), and don't wanna be without it. I use it for groundhog, coyote, feral cat, etc. Since we can't use CF rifles for deer here, it's never really been THAT big a deal to rack the bolt a second time to extract an empty.

Joe, would you say you've worn the extractor out or do you think it may have had issues from the get go ???

I bought the gun used in '01. It was the first gun I purchased when I decided to get back into hunting. I've put pretty close to 1,000 rounds through it since I bought it.

The extractor seems to have detached from the recess in the bolt. It's been like that since I got it (I missed it when I was looking at the gun, and since it came off the used rack at a gun shop, there was no returning it), but I just figured out a way around it. Hit your target with the first shot, then you don't need a hurried follow up shot.

Some Remington extractors have been known to be lemons caused by improper heat treat and are generally noticed from the start. Perhaps thats why that gun ended up on the used gun rack. Smile
