How would you do it???
you have carte-blanc to re-build, re-arm, re-organise, re-model the armed forces- all the armed forces- you can even delete or almagamate current forces into or out of whats currently on offer.
How would you do it??
If that concept is to big- take a current branch an re-do it starting from the lowest rank to the highest including TOE if you want.
thanks

Normally on forums have pretty neat responces for these kinds of threads. And since no one else has posted I'll start.
Firstly I'd get rid of the Army, Navy and Airforce. A Single combined Navy with Marines (like the US) and a deticated Airforce which would be part of the Navy.
I'd probably arm everyone with M14's (standard rifle), L42 ("sniper" version of the Lee-Enfield), FN MAG (Machine gun as a SAW). Notice they are all 308s ?? As well as M1911A1 Pistols and a modified version of the Sterling SMG that would use the 45ACP not the 9mm.
Navy mainly Destoryers that would be armed to the teeth, some transport boats, some large Landing boats, a carrier or 2 (If this was to happen in a richer country), Support and Supply vessels and some Coast Gaurd type vessels.
AirForce mainly F-18's (or if it was possible a moderinzed version of the Avro Arrow), C-130 Transports, A-10's, limited amounts of AWACS planes, some F-15E's and some Apache helocopters.
Army would get LAV's in various configerations and Challanger 2 tanks.
After getting all of that I think I'd be over budget and the country would be broke so I guess I should stop there.
Dimitri

I retired from the U S Navy (22yrs). When I retired I retired. And I mean retired...It's someone else's problem. I only have time to deal with horses and MY firearms.

In a recent election, the U.S. decided it would be the democrats that would shape our nation, mainly because the war in Iraq (overseen by the Republicans) became un-popular. The democrats have all the answers, so, I'll sit back & let the democrats overhaul our military like they've done in the past. Like Bushy, us retired military folks need to let the younger generation have a crack at it (no punn intended).
Keep it coming...

Hm, now how would I go about re-inventing the wheel???? Nah, not worth the trouble.....although it would be good to fix the "top heavy" problem we are suffering now. Too many chiefs and not enough indians!
I'm with Bushy and George on this one. I did my time in the Australian Army...26 yrs....so the young guys can do their bit now....although I wouldn't say no to an operational deployment to either Afghanistan or Iraq.....just for the experience.
Cheers, Vince

Dimitri:
When I get to be King of the World, after the heads stop rolling, YOU will be my Secretary of WAR. Not defense, let's call it what it is.
I'd need somebody really smart to figure it all out, but, I think something close to what you suggested for armament, .308 caliber, marksmanship training along the lines of the Australian, and universal military training and other service for conscientious objectors a mandatory part.
All that, modeled along the lines of the Israeli and Swiss defense forces, with American tactics and equipment for "social encounters" Enough of the above to handle two major engagements anywhere in the world, and a smaller outbreak, if someone should think to take advantage of a tight situation. Destroyers and carriers, and subs, OH MY!
Air Force? Oh, Yes! Keep Area 51 pumping out those strange and marvelous designs.
Did my bit, too. But we all have to keep an eye on what may affect us years in the future. (Unintended Consequences, you know.)
On election day, a good friend's mother had stood in line a long time; her feet and back hurt, and she was a bit "out of sorts".
She was sitting down, resting, when a TV reporter approached her, and asked her why she had voted. She looked at him and said: " To keep my bitching rights, sir!" That one didn't appear on the six O'clock news.
