LOL, dch4, that was great! Though I have to tell you that I've thought more how to freeze it out which shouldn't result in a KABOOM.

liquid nitrogen?
How would a primer react on such an extreme cold?

"Generally" extreme cold will drastically slow down or stop chemical reactions, so it shouldnt go off.
Smacking the rod after freezing in liquid nitrogen might just get it out either by shattering it or cold shrinking it enough to release it from the chamber wall.
Harden up slim, we now ALL want a kaboom, videoed of course

Actually - doing the math - If you use liquid nitrogen and drop the temp by 400 F - the brass contraction rate is 0.004 and the 4140 Steel would be 0.003" - If the chamber is 316 SS the contraction rate is 0.0035"

Dawgdad, using the liquid nitrogen sounds more dangerous that trying to set the primer off. I was thinking of doing the idea of water changing to ice and pushing the round out. Can you do the calculations for that? Its a 16-in barrel (minus 2.260 for the round)? How much will the water column expand?

having a Navy background I am familiar with the origins. However, you need to get it right. its "freeze the balls off a brass monkey". When ships were made out of wood and men of steel, cannon balls were often stored on racks made of brass, called "monkeys". When it got too cold, the brass contracted more than the cannon balls which fell off and went rolling down the sloped deck. Sloped to make it easy to push the cannons back into firing position after they were loaded.

Bushy, I figured you were that type of "tough" guy. Easy to deduce, your avatar shows you are the elder statesman of the group. Both by the maturity of the gentleman in the picture and the fact color images weren't even around back when it was taken.
