I drew my first cow tag this year. I am looking forward to this hunt. It takes place in February and there is only about 130 tags given out for this hunt. I think there is a good chance I will be successful. If I am it will be the first elk that I have gotten.

think positive..you WILL be successful!!!!
get the BBQ out before you leave all ready to fire up and get stuck into some heart and eye steak when you return laden down with venison.
get out and do the recon get to know your area and animals before the big day..if its a aways to travel...find the time to do it anyway.. load the dice in your favour and as Vince has so aptly put it anything legal you can.

Congratulations on the tag!

My advice: line up horses. Elk hunting is much easier with them than without. Elk are generally up in places well away from roads and motorized traffic.

My state gives out tens of thousands of cow elk tags... if you have horses its nearly 100% success but if you dont success rates are around 8-10%

My hunt is actually quite close to home but the land is gated for most of the year and I will be getting a key for my hunt along with a map. I checked out the statistics and found that there is a 24% success rate for this hunt. Not great but better than the bull hunts that I have been on.

where there is a will there is a way...see what you can do about a scout around. sitting and watchinf from a distance is better than nothing. a good look around on google earth before hand should show promising areas. is it gated for a particular reason??? maybe there is a legit way to get in for a look?
