Seems to me that they don't understand that it is NOT a "gun problem, it is a CRIME problem. Until they realize the difference they'll never even begin to solve it.

Pkslinger, I agree with you 100%. One needs to be able to see the nose in front of their face.

You think its that bad?
Try working in the industry! Upstairs don't have a clue what happens downstairs, they work on airy fairy theory not the practicalities.
Love my job though!

So Radar at what level does the reality disconnect occur?
Are upstairs political appointments with no policing experience or do they work themselves up through the ranks?
Either way it seems someone needs to get out of the office a lot more and go and see what the rank and file are actually doing and thinking, that would be rule one of good leadership.

Its not different in military environments mate. We always referred to HQ as Malfunction Junction or Bullsh1t Castle.
The hierarchy in Police HQ over here are referred to as "corridor creepers". They have worked their way up through the ranks, but are not true coppers...they are ambitious, political, individuals who are only concerned about their image and status. It is, in the vast majority of cases, many a long day since these individuals actually did any real policing. They are way out of touch with the real world and real Police Officers.
Cheers, Vince

In NZ once you leave the ranks of NCO and become a Commissioned officer you become a Political Animal. I have reached as far up the greasy pole as I want to be, I plan to leave a legacy and be remembered as one of the boys. I look after my team and will try my level best to protect them from Political BS. Its a hard job on a bad day but you need leaders at the front line who don't mind getting dirty....thats me!
We have a mix of sworn and non sworn 'managers', notice I don't use the term leaders because theres a difference and thats where I'll leave it.
Vince rounded it out nicely.
