without context its hard to judge. now if in enemy territory and the target clearly is on of the other fellas??? or there is a very strong right to left wind(trees dont look like it).

Strong wind at long range. I'm guessing at 4 mils high, the are around 500-600 yards away. That's 40" of lead on the one with the rifle. That would have to be almost a 20 mph direct crosswind with a .308. Not a shot I could take with consistency.

12 inches of head at about 1/2 a mil = about 660 yards by my range calc.

2 guys with clearly visable weapons would be my first choice though - if its safe why not call in a proximity weapon. Like an air asset or Tank round.

I guess if they're bad guys and presenting a target have a go! I don't think I could do it without a precision weapon system and a lot of practice.

I have hit a 12 inch target at 1000 yards with a top of the line F Class rifle in 6.5x284 two for two. Clear still day!

Its probably a Night Force scope, they are absolutely awesome, I just can't afford one; even the cheapest here in NZ are about $4K.

Thats what its all about, decent scope, decent weapon, decent ammo and a well trained operator. as you said RTA.

I wonder..

Do any of you have a personal gripe against the guy in the crosshair?
I dont know who he is and what relation he have from the guy behind the scope,
how can any judge whether or not to shoot at a PERSON without processing any reason to do so?

I personally think it is a bad taste to display human as target on a hunting forum.

Sorry to be a party buster.

Don't get me wrong, this does NOT offend me at all.
It is the thought of bringing the cross hair to a stranger that I do not have any reason to gripe with, do not sit well in my conscience.

Hunting and shooting are great passions of mine, so far shooting at animal has been restricted enough due to the misconception of the antis.
Now adding to that the morons that do shooting sprees without proven reason towards another human being, just because of his or her personal view of righteousness said that such and such got to die, had made my hobby of gun shooting a vile sports in the eyes of the general public.
Yeah, who gives about their bigoted opinions?
Well, those who writes the law do, and for what they are sprouting, we the innocent shooter has to pay the price!

Would you, put someone in your cross hair without proper research on the reason and without proper justification to do so?
Is that because the guy is WEARING what looks like the middle eastern garb, and thus he is guilty?
Do you know what his view to your culture is?
How to do you know for certain?

gelandangan, I hear you. I was assuming US Army sniper on a mission where ROE apply. You post definitely addresses the topic "should he?"

The pic appears to be taken in Afghanistan...the apparel of the people, the construction of the wall, the way the guy in the left background is squatting, the look of the road construction, the trees in the background, the guy watching the buildings (security) and the firearm and mode of carriage all point to a Taliban "soldier". However, as Elvis says, without knowing the context, exactly what the pic is all about, where it was taken and the circumstances of why the guy is carrying, we can't make a decision.

If the pic is what I suspect it might be, a pic taken from an observation post through a scope, showing Taliban soldiers, then I don't have a problem with the pic. I believe some Sniper Team Spotting Scopes have mil-dot cross hairs the same as the sniper scope, so that is most likely what the pic is.

Another scenario is the pic is a screenshot taken from one of the many "shoot 'em up" games available today.

To squeeze the trigger or not...only the guys that took the pic are in a position to make that decision, based on the scenario. But if it is Taliban, then I think the right lead might be a tad too much and there needs be some bullet drop compensation added.

Cheers, Vince
