One of my most shameful moments.
It was 20 minutes after the opener of the 2006 traditional 9 day deer season.
A 6 point buck got up from it's bed to my left at about 100yds and headed towards my right. In a solid ground sitting position I leveled off my trusty 30-30 down my firing lane directly in front of this nice buck. I aimed directly between two trees and waited for brown in my scope. When I had a shoulder on the crosshairs- I squeezed the trigger... The buck reared back turned hard left and dashed out of sight. I was puzzled, he ran awfully well for a shot buck. I lit a cigarette, grabbed my range finder and checked one of the two trees - 50 yds. Huh, had to have hit him.. so I finished my cigarette and moved down to check for blood... nothing, I looked everywhere, followed the severely disturbed leaves, nothing. I was even more puzzled, looking up at my firing position from where the buck was and then I saw this sapling. It was small enough to hide behind my duplex crosshairs. the hollow point bullet entered dead center and turned right on exit passing the buck directly (inches) in front of him... I'm leaning towards another caliber for a brush gun... perhaps a 45-70 and now the moral boys and girls. move the scope if you have time. The .357 mag cartridge is for comparison to the size of this evil quick moving tree. Even I don't miss at 50 yds. when it's a buck walking at a slow pace. So I ofcourse have to blame myself and most definitely the tree.
Keywords: mistakes, deflection, 30-30, oops
