Finally had a little free time to get out with my camera. Found these guys down by a nearby creek. Hopefully one day I'll draw a tag and take one with my other canon. Very Happy

They almost look dumb Moose. Are they difficult to hunt mate? I see Troubles is happy with the taste, so I suppose they are well worth the effort mate.

Great photos! There is a bull moose mount at the entrance to the Bass Pro Shop in Charlotte that always gets me thinking that I'd like to try hunting them. I'm guessing that Maine would be the closest location for me.

LOL Bushy! I suppose it depends on what moose eat as to how they taste. Around here it runs from very close to grass fed beef to having a definite woody flavour. The last one I shot was about the size of the smaller one in Moose's pictures. It was so tender it could be cooked any way you would cook good beef. Great taste, not unlike young beef. The worst I ever shot was a big cow. Eating her was like chewing on the end of a birch twig.

Anyone hunting moose for the first time should take a moment to look at the way they are built up front. Many new moose hunters have a tendency to shoot high because of the hump. Besides wasting meat, a hump hit moose can live for days unless one of the spinal blades is hit.

Many moose are killed here with the older cartridges such as the 30-30 and the .303 is also popular. I have had good results with both the .308 and 30-06. In the magnums people use .270, 7mm and .300. Anything bigger is not required but I have seen a few safari rifles used, mostly by non-resident hunters. The ones I have fired hurt me almost as much as the moose Laughing

I like the challenge of hunting moose. But I do not like it so much after harvesting one and getting down to dressing it, than comes the hard part of transporting it out of the bush. Last year my brother and I hunted moose and he was lucky enough to get a small buck (about 1 ½ years old). From his hunting camp we canoe up a large lake, than a portage a few hundred feet and cross another lake, than up a small creek to our secluded hunting stand. That is a really good spot, but for two old buggers likes us, it is quite a chore to get the carcass out, even when cut up in four pieces plus the head. Next year we will hunt closer to camp, where we can drive to the site with our ATV.
Oh yes the meat was delicious and I am looking forward to the 2012 season.

The moose steaks, roasts, ribs and ground was Alaskan moose.

After about two weeks of moose I really couldn't tell the difference between the sugar bowl or the steak. It was the only meat on board the Limited seiner...

Not sure what yer feedin' them Blacktails these days, but the ones [especially the last one] that I shot were unbelievably tender and tasty. You sure you guys are field dressing them properly? That IS the key to good meat, ya know.

Yall bleed the meat after ya butcher them dont ya? I keep my deer on ice for at least 3 days and change the ice everyday. Meat turns from red to almost white. No gamey taste at all.

Myself, I've never hunted moose. I've helped pack them out, eaten quite afew pounds of them and see them all the time. They are quite prevalent around here. I don't have to much problem finding them. They would be relativily easy to find and harvest a decent one around here. The greatest obastacle is drawing the tag. You can shoot as many as you want all year round with your camera though. Maybe some day I'll be fortunate to draw that tag. Very Happy

Where do you hunt TRBLSHTR? Mine came from the Cascades western side. Those on the eastern side that live in the piney woods and go out on the high desert and eat sage are a bit aromatic in flavor.

Where ya at Suz? Chime in anytime.
