Hi Dallan. I don't know if I have missed it, or is isn't in there...but how do I put my 12g shotgun into the Firearm Registry and record loads I've developed? I've looked right through everything and just can't see anything to do with a shotgun.

Cheers, Vince

Your right Vince, I tried it and even tried editing the calibers.slk file and saving it as ms excel file and it failed. Hmm, since .slk is usually a ms excel or ms database file, or could it be something else?

Shotguns have always been a royal pain as they dont follow "diameter" based values for their bore, something that is the core of how PointBlank organizes its data internally.

Alright, I've looked this over off and on when I get suggestions on it. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks Dallan.

I think if you use the nominal "bore" diameter for the various guages it might solve the problem. If that means that each individual guage ends up spread throughtout the calibre list, well so be it. As with the individual rifle bore sizes, the actual calibre name designation is recorded, the same could possibly be done for the shotgun guage name.

Example: a 12 guage shotgun is nominally .730" so there could be a Caliber Entry for that size and under that entry something to identify it as the 12 guage....730" (12 guage shotgun) or (12 bore shotgun).

Another option might be to give the shotgun a pseudo name or bore size in the Caliber list, then list all of the shotguns under that entry, again identifying the individual bores in brackets so there isn't any confusion.

This is a link to a website that gives the nominal sizes of the various shotgun bores...hopefully it will make life easy for you mate.

Shotgun Bore Diameters

If that doesn't work mate, don't bust a gut over it...it ain't a biggie or a war winner.

Cheers, Vince

Vince, where's cal 36, cal 8, cal 4... in your list? I've never seen a cal 2 (or is that such a barrel fixed on a little boat for duckhunting?), but knowing what the old guys could build, I wouldn't even be amazed when odd numbers appeared in the line.

Aloysius
A relative of mine has a 4 bore (gauge) punt gun that was given to him by his grandpa. I have never seen a 2 bore but have seen a "A" bore which is 2" diameter bore at a museum. It has been said that one shot from these guns will take anywhere from 50 to 100 waterfowl at a time. The link below gives a little history on them shotguns.

so there is a 2 bore.
A friend here has a 4 bore single shot with a barrel of 1,5 m in his collection, Eley even still makes cartridges for that. And some english man has been hunting elephants with that caliber, shooting a soft lead slug trough the animal at 500 yards (when I remember correct). But he was also limited till about 4 shots a day and had a black helper to massage his shoulder after every shot... Smile

but in our part of the world we are only allowed from cal 12 till cal 24 for hunting, so no cal 8 or 10 and it hurts more that the 28 till 36 is not allowed.

Aloys...using the nominal diameter in inches will bring the different shotgun bores or guages inline with the other caliber measurements.

Not sure if this will work...only Dallan will know for certain as its his database.

Found out what's going on with the calibers.slk file where everytime I edit the file and fire up the program, it updates itself from Huntingnuts DB and over writes my file. So I figured ok, edit the file once again and change attributes to read-only, fire up the program and Net Framework complains that it cannot access a read only caliber.slk file. Change attributes back to normal and unplug ethernet and fire up program "pointblank.exe" and it balks cuz no internet connecting so I hit ok and program shuts down... Mad Mad

Now I also tried launching with PB updater and it balks when ethernet is unplugged and when you hit ok, it shuts down then. So I figured since laptop is updated with latest patches and Net Framework ver 4 I should be all set...nope. Sad

What I did on the caliber.slk file was to put the 12 gauge shotgun under
; Diameter .7
0.7 .700 Nitro Express
0.73 .730 12 Gauge Shotgun
I don't see why this would not work, it should show up as 12 gauge shotgun if the program didn't overwrite the file. Smile

This will be in and working in the next version.

A full listing of all bore sizes can be found here:

In the mean time, I've cheated a bit. For my 12 gauge, I put it in as a .12 Caliber for listing purposes only as I don't reload for shotgun, so it doesn't really matter.
Keep up the good work Dallan!
