|
I am getting two Garands from CMP in the next couple months.
I currently have Redding S-type dies for the .270win. Can I use these with the appropriate bushings for the "06?
If not, do any of have some "06 dies you no longer need?
Thanks,
Ray

NO, the dies are .277 in for 270win, the 30/06 is .308

The .270win is a necked down '06 case that is a little longer. So what part of the '06 will not fit in the S-type bushing die? Is the body actually bigger, the shoulder in a different position or ....?
Please expound on you answer.
Thanks,
Ray

A quick email to Redding should get you the definitive answer.

The shoulder area of the .270 is .047 longer than the 30-06, this will place the bushing in the wrong place.
I believe the longer taper of the .270 will create a situation in-which the neck/shoulder junction will be under .308

Dies are dirt cheap compared to an "issue".

The longer shoulder is because it starts in the same place as the 30-06 but has to continue further due to the smaller neck diameter of the .270. Never having seen a bushing die, I wouldn't know if this is important.

Dies are 30-40$. Less than a box of premium hunting ammo.
Least that can happen experimenting w/ something not noted in a manual? A crunched case/boogered die.
Worst that can happen?

Stovey, If he wants a Redding (like he uses for the .270) type S FL re-size it's $53.00 plus $14 (standard) or $22 (titanium) for the bushing and still needs a seating die !!!

I should have said SOME dies....either or. I can see the attraction and the temptation for cross-over applications. But, it aint me. Dies can last a lifetime. A worthwile investment in my book, esp for the right tool for the job. Just my .02 and don't mean to be a wet blanket guys.

Thanks for all the input guys.
Here is what Redding sent me;
Hi Ray
Thank you for using Redding Reloading Equipment. Redding's policy is you can go up or down one caliber with a bushing die. The 30-06 and 270 Win is two calibers. I checked a 30-06 Springfield fired case in a 270 Win Type S Neck Die and the neck would be sized by the pass thru hole and not the bushing.

So, I will get the Full Length Type-S die from Redding, I can use the seating die that I have.
