OK...I'm sure we have covered this in the past, but I haven't been able to find the info back there.
Anyway...was given anine hundred assorted large primers yesterday, all still in their original packs. The primers consisted of 600 Large Rifle (400 Winchester WW #8 1/2 - 120 and 200 Vihtavuori #28) and 300 Large Pistol (200 CCI #300 and 100 Vihtavuori #48). I also have 152 mixed brand primers in a Primer Tray...don't know if they are large RIFLE, PISTOL or a mix.
As I said, I am sure we have covered this in the past, but can large PISTOL primers be used in rifle cartridges using the large RIFLE primer?
I think (I'm not sure) the only difference between the two types of primers is the PISTOL primers may be a bit hotter and have a softer cup than the RIFLE primers.
Be a shame to waste any of these, so if they can be used in a LR cartridge that would be great.
Cheers, Vince

dont do it
dont do it
DONT DO IT

I believe the pistol primers are softer and wont handle the pressure.

Vince, I only use small pistol MAGNUM primers in the .222 Rem or the .22 Hornet. In the last one I also use small pistol primers, but never in the .222 Rem.
I wouldn't even dare to use large pistol primers (any kind) in reduced rifles loads, because before you know it they get mixed up and hot gasses could burn your cheek (or your eye).
Or do you like burned cheeks?

I have used SR primers in my .357 for over 20 years in a pinch and never had a problem. Federal 200 Small Rifle primer was also listed by Federal as High Velocity Small Pistol. I have never tried pistol primers in a rifle load as rifle primers are plentiful around here. LP and LR primers are different heights and I do know they used to use 2 or 3 different colors to identify the primers but cannot remember nowdays.
As always, when using different primers, start with minimum load and work up.

Not a problem, done deal...looks like I need to find a home for some large pistol primers.
Had a mental block....couldn't remember if they were compatable. Realistically, I should know without thinking, but for some reason that mental block took hold.
Just out of curiosity I might do some measuring of the overall dimensions of the two types of primers so I know for certain at least the physical differences.
Sorry for asking such a dumb question, as I say...should have known better myself.

As a general rule pistol primers are, as you said, softer than those for rifles. In low pressure loads it probably wouldn't hurt anything, but since most rifles work at pressures much higher than pistols and have (usually) larger firing pin holes, you would risk piercing or experience primer-flow if used in rifles. That is why many of the hottest, high pressure pistol loads (.454 Casull, 7mm BR and etc.) use rifle primers.
But it looks like you figured that out anyway!

Small primers are physically the same size.
Large primers have a slightly different height between rifle and pistol.
All dimensions vary among brands but fall into a standard.
Cup thickness and the charge itself are the most important factors.

Primers are cheap (still). Toss those that you can't identify.
