last build was a 8-280Ackley built nostalgically with english walnut and receiver site also barrel band and banded front from n.e.c.g., next one is going to be allout modern I'm thinking a 7mm with kinda heavy stainless barrel, synthetic stock, some one suggested using a savage action and I measured it and got an idea to match the O.D. of the receiver, recoil lug, and cylinder section of the barrel. once I looked around though I'm seeing very little in the way of barrels with 1.35 shanks. Feel free to comment on any of the above. Shocked

Nobody has any comments on 7mm cartridges, Stainless barrels or their favorite receivers? That is hard to believe.

Sorry about that!!! I’ve missed a few things here lately!!!

Don’t care for Savage, Remington 700s and Model 7s Are my favorite.
I’ve thought about using a Surgeon or Pierce action for a tactical build. (700 copies)
I’m a huge 7mm08 fan. If your looking for a heavy barrel consider one 28-30 inches. That will get your velocity up and be very economical.

If you want 7mm opinions, I have some. In my opinion, when you consider economy, efficiency and performance, the 7mm Remington Magnum is king.

There are some like the 7mm Weatherby Magnum and the 7mm STW that may get a little more velocity but at the price of reduced barrel life, more expensive brass and the use of quite a bit more powder.

My 7mm Remington Magnum has a braked stainless steel barrel, a stainless steel receiver and a composite stock. Best of all, I can use the receiver to "build" a rifle chambered for another cartridge easily and the accuracy is excellent; it's an Encore.

Another "build" to consider would be the Blaser R 93 though it doesn't come in stainless steel. You can change barrels/cartridge chamberings iin a couple of minutes, easily remove and reattach the scope with no loss of zero and the trigger is so good, you won't need a trigger job. In addition, the safety actually releases the tension on the firing pin so there is no possible way the rifle can accidentally discharge with the safety on and a round in the chamber.

I've heard good things about Savage rifles with the Accu Trigger. If I wasn't a handloading loony and was going to have an economical rifle in one chambering it's probably what I would get.

I've been considering building a 276 Enfield. Been working on how to modify a Ross action to do it. Still may be a while till the design is ready though.

If you want a accurate gun - get a Savage .If you remember the NRA maga- zine for several months back a ordinary Savage was said to have outshot custom rifles .The 7mm. packs a mean punch .

That's what I'm talking about, this is a forum right? Very Happy Okay, Hart said they'll do a 1.35 dia shank .284 1-8 in a #5 28"; anyone need a brand new stainless barrel from a savage 116 standard .25-06, .270, or 30-06? I'm going to use a sharp shooter trigger so the accu-trigger is up for grabs too, as well as the stock. Located some Redding .280 Ackley dies locally for $10 I simichromed the insides and now they are good as new. I took that as a sign to go that way. Inside mag dimension is over 3.5" . Anyone been able to put some calipers on berger 180's yet. I'd love to know the meplat to bearing surface @.276" measurement, and bullet lengths are. Shocked Now I'm trying to decide which McMillan to get I have a f.n. in .308 on an A-3-5 not trying to go tactical this time. more "Beanfield". The varmint, and the hunter come in #5 channels. Also I'm looking at the 1.35 shank being a potential trouble spot although that's the dimension of the nut that comes on them. So any stock built for these actions should accomadate this. I'm going to breech it so the breech almost kisses the boltface when closed, then chamber it so it will be a "no nuts". Then leave the 1.35" section as long as the stock and #5 contour will allow. Flutes or no flutes?

I would prefer another action as well, I like the older Sako's but I do agree the savages do shoot it's just they are so 'ugly'. Crying or Very sad
For the barrel go unfluted 'cause fluted barrel are just plain ugly as well. Sad Smooth is much more pleasing, at least to me. Very Happy
Should be a top piece of gear when you get it up and running.

Wicky and Chambered, I understand your classic taste and own more classic rifles then any other kind, Mannlicher Schoenauer, Mauser Sporting Rifles, Model 70"s etc., And I love hearing other opinions, Let me express some of mine I do have many, The whole point of this project was raw function, I looked at some other actions by various custom builders and only saw a few that had alot of "neat" factor but in all honesty I couldn't put them ahead of the savage when it came to function. Actually the one that I really liked mechanically was the new Howa, It has a sako style extractor. I just didn't find alot of aftermarket stuff for it. Thats the reason I can't go with a Remington factory receiver, the extractor, The first thing to go would be the extractor. I own a F.N. in a McMillan a-3-5 and am sold on their "70ish" action. Also the McMillian is a fantastic platform and will probably do a different styled stock from that maker. Alot of people don't care for the looks of factory savages mainly because of the barrel nut, A friend of mine that has built more rifles then I have and is familiar with high end stuff once built a savage left off the nut, modified the bolt, stocked it in a nice stock and hung it on the wall, few people guessed it right the first time. I think mostly because of his reputation. It shot great also. So Hart barrel because function is high ( It's a proven performer, And they will do the 1.35" shank.) McMillian Stock, Also a known good factor, Savage action( trued at the factory stainless, over 3.5" mag box, center feed, and a long threaded section.) Sharpshooter trigger, .280 Ackley Standard mag capacity, plenty of powder to propel 180's to longer ranges than I can shoot.(and I got a smoking deal on the dies). Please feel free to post criticisms and compliments, because if a method can't stand debate, it may not be strong enough to hold onto.

fn, bottom line is it’s your money and you’re the one that’s gotta be happy in the end!!!

But since your asking for my 2 cents, I’ll give it!!!
Dress up a Savage all you want......... wtf At the end of the day it’s still a Savage!!! (refer back to opening statement)

As for the 700 extractor, sorry I just don’t get it with everyone wanting to switch them over to a Sako style. I have never had one fail nor have I seen one that did. I still haven’t even found anyone else that has had a problem with one. I'm sure somewhere someone has had one break or malfunction but I seriously don’t believe it to be the issue that some make it to be.

There are center feed systems available for the 700.
Triggers, I don’t think I really need to say anything here.
Stocks, the same.
I know the Surgeon is on the expensive side but when you stop and compare what you’re getting out of the box and compare that to buying a Remington action and having it trued up, the difference isn’t as bad as it first looks.
A couple of features it comes with are an oversize integral recoil lug and a 20 M.O.A. 1913 rail that’s also built in.
Some are even available with the longer tenon
By the way, Surgeon didn’t see the need to change the extractor either. I would think that if it was an issue an action this well planned out would have taken that into consideration.

fn +1 with chambered my 2c worth only.
I have mates with Savages and they all shoot well just not my cup of tea.
This is your project and as long as you are happy with it that's the main thing. I wish you success and hope it goes well.

I'm trying to understand you and love debating the topic, I probaby see a lot more guns in a week working the front counter at a fix it shop then most people see in a lifetime maybe cuurent company excluded, I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or correct them just sharing thoughts on a forum, The fact that you dress up a savage and its still a savage doesn't mean much, does it ? You could fill in the blanks with any brand name and it still applies. I've seen 3 busted extractors on remingtons with that staked in c-spring thingy they call their extractor. Those were upgrade jobs to the sako type because now the owners are believers. And if you like spending money on neat stuff that may or may not increase function go ahead, its your money, for now.
