I have the oppurtunity to hunt some private land in the Issaquah area, here in Washington. A gal is having some problems with coyotes consuming her chickens at an alarming rate.
The dumb part of me, that likes to oversimplify everything around me says, that some chicken distress calls would be the ticket. Since I have about 50 hours of calling sounds and sequences on a MP-3 player type gig, I can play em anything from Cottontails to Meat-Loaf.I don't think that Bat Out of Hell would be very effective, but I'll give it a shot someday and report back my results.
I suspect I'll get the, "Try what and see what works." response, but I won't get to many cracksa at this before this gal tells me I'm an incompetent fool and runs me off. That, and I don't think that she likes Meat Loaf either...... Mad
So anyhow, any of you guys up in this part of the country have a generic starting sequence that you would use?

Thanks y'all!!

Confused I don't know about Issaquah-but if the chickensounds don't work-then the kitty/kittens sounds should, even coyote pups sounds seem to bring them in quick.Down here in the portland area(rural) they enjoy fine dining on kitties! wtf

So I'm not totally off my rocker to go in with a 15-20 minute chicken sequence? 5-min silence, chicken (1), 2 min Silence Chicken (2), silence, chicken, ETC............

Then I'll polish it off with some Hendrix........................

Thanks Guys.

As important as what sounds you use is when you make them. Check the activity in your area with a solunar table and select a day and time that matches your ability to be in the hen house. Does not matter what sound you make if all the ,Yotes are asleep in the den.

At this time of year in the midwest there has not been a lot of hunting pressure and about any high pitched distress sound will bring a young 'yote to the call. Start off soft and work up in volume in case they are close by. When you get the kill- switch to the Wagner opera music....Smells like, Victory!

The chicken call can be super effective. We use an open reed for that, but, my recommendation is more about volume of sound. IMO&E, callers often start their calling sequence with far too much volume. I have seen coyotes startled out of draws running hard the opposite direction when this happens. Move to the stand slowly, remain still and begin with a very soft volume for several calling sequences and, then, increase volume gradually.

BTW, I don't know if Hendrix works, but, we forgot our tapes (old Johnny Stewart -- this was before digitals and CDs) but happened to have Pantera's Cemetary Gates. Coyotes are curious, often to their demise. We nailed three that day courtesy of Pantera. But, please --- for the sake of human and animal ears, avoid Barbara Streisand.

Have hunted a small horse stable/training property that has been feeding the coyotes chickens. Doesn't seem to matter what calls we use they don't come. Just have to hang around and ambush them.

Or, like one of the neighbors of the stable did, sit on the porch drinking an afternoon brew and when the 'yote chased the chicken up on the porch he shot the 'yote. Very Happy
