My family used to cook horny toads over an open pit about 500 yeas ago! ROFL

Seriously, I don't know. This is just what some computer encyclopedia geek stated. I hope I didn't offend anyone by that statement!!! Hiding

Bushy, what the heck is "Salmon Ala Selbee"? Does that translate into English as "burnt fish"?

I heard that if you're not very good at catching fish and bring some really small perch home to eat, because that was all you had, you could cook them really done (almost burned), not have to filet them, and eat bones and all.

Hey, I know what you guys are thinking; you were thinking that was me. Hey I was really hungry, I mean..........that was what a friend told me. fish

Bushy,

Down here, we don't have salmon, but I'll go buy some if you'll tell me how to cook it.

Gidday FAL....don't really matter where BBQ was first "invented"....most important thing is that is was. Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

I have a 27" Weber and a Rinnai 4 burner barby with hood that can be used as a rotisserie, oven or grill. The Rinnai gets the most work, although nothing is better than a roast done in the Weber.

Over here in aussie we also have things we call a Camp Oven, although I have heard them called Dutch Ovens as well....no, not the dutch ovens we all like playing with the missus Fart wtf Shocked Very Happy Laughing Laughing ... it is a cast iron pot:
An extremely versatile piece of cooking equipment for the camper or hunter. Light your fire, burn it down to coals, put your prepared roast/joint into the camp oven, put the oven on the coals, put hot coals onto the lid then head out hunting or fishing. After a few hours your roast will be ready. YUMMO.

when did you ever see a cattle drive where cooky had 7 hours to cook anything?

I thought that the "drive cooky" always went on ahead of the drive to set up camp and start cooking for the drovers....well that what they always showed on the cowboys movies on TV. Very Happy Laughing

Vince, we call them "dutch ovens". They are an excellent utensil for cooking cobbler, which is a deep dish fruit dessert which only has a crust on the top. I have also used a dutch oven to cook camp biscuits in. Out 'biscuits' are not like the Brit biscuits, which we call 'cookies', but rather something that looks like this:

Our biscuits are good for making small sandwiches, where the filling is patty sausage, sliced ham, a big ole slice of toe-MAY-toe, or something sweet like jelly or honey.

Sorry, mate, we don't eat Vegemite.

Mate...they look awesome. Very Happy Very Happy

What you could do is make them a little bigger in diameter, a little thinner (a hamburger bun now), put some mayo, lettuce, toe-MAY-toe ( Laughing ), grated carrot, slice of BEETROOT (GOTTA have beetroot), cheese, fried slice of pineapple, fried egg, fried bacon, fried onion then your meat pattie topped off with your sauce of choice (I like BBQ Sauce)...viola, the most magnificent hamburger you could ever ask for...I'm having a couple tonight for dinner.

We make something similar called Damper:

Aussie Damper

You don't eat Vegemite??? Shocked Its good for ya mate.

Cheers, Vince

Vince,

I looked up a recipe for Australian Dampers. They are slightly different from our biscuits. I printed out a recipe that sounds pretty good and when I get back from a small family business trip, I'm going to make me a batch. I've got to fly to Denver, Colorado tomorrow and drive a car back to South Texas. This is about a 16 to 18 hour trip, straight through.

I also looked up Vegemite a while back. I'm not too sure about the taste, from looking at the ingredients. I'd like to try it, but in South Texas, I don't know where I'd find it, since it's not Mexican food.

Now here's another idea that you can make use of in the camp:

Jaffle Ideas

If you aren't sure what a jaffle iron is, check this out:

They are not all as fancy as this one.
Closed

Open

A different type in use

Easy to carry, easy to use, and it will make the most "flavourful", tasty and satisfying light meal you could ever want. Two slices of bread, some butter and your filling of choice...load 'er up and onto the hot coals...yum. The range of fillings you can use are only limited by your imagination.

I have three different types of jaffle iron...a single "square", a double "square" and a double "round". I never leave mine at home when I go camping....always take one with me.

Cheers, Vince

You know I have for the FIRST time biscuits and Gravy on my little trip to Oregon, home made, very yummy and I was really wanting more (read it as I had 2 helpings of it but was still "un-full" inside). I've been missing out I think. Sad
