Has anyone seen this new powder for sale anywhere yet? It is supposed to be an awesome blackpowder substitute; very clean, not need to clean between shots or for that matter, no need to rush home and clean after shooting.

I've read a couple of extremely positive reviews on this stuff and it was supposed to be on the dealers' shelves in April, but I have not seen it yet.

Have any of you seen it yet, bought and tried it yet? What are your thoughts on it?

Thanks.

Parkerbill, I haven't seen that one yet so I'll look around some. So far I'm extremely pleased with Hodgdon Triple 7.

I've had pretty good luck with Triple-7, too, but hey, if there is something better, I am sure going to try it. Know what I mean?

The new Blackhorn 209 is supposed to be much cleaner burning and neither the poweder or its residue are supposed to attract moisture like Triple-7, Pyrodex and most of the others do. At least that is what the reviews I've read said. I posted the links to the two reviews in this forum several weeks ago.

The reviews are on these two sites:

hpmuzzleloading.net/MMLHome.html

www.randywakeman.com/inline.htm

Check them out and see what you think.

The shipping and hazmat fees are making the price outrageous, but I have not been able to find it outside of Midway! Even Cabelas does not have it. Sportsmans Warehouse is supposed to get it, but don't know when!

Doesnt work in flinters or even a percussion sidelock so it is completely useless to me. Blackpowder is HARD to come by in Alaska, I have been hoping for a substitute for the flintlocks to come along...........this certainly isnt it.

Roklok, have you tried the Triple 7 in a flintlock? I know it would ignite in my percussion musket when used as a blank.

I have not personally, but a friend has. Even in the TC Firestorm, which is supposed to work with pellets, without a "starter" charge of black powder Triple 7 is slow to ignite, if at all. And I dont believe any substitute has a chance of working in the pan of a flinter. Luckily, when I moved to Alaska I brought a small supply of black powder along. I have been considering the next trip I make to PA of loading 100 45-70 cartridges with 4F blackpowder and then pulling the bullets when I get back to Alaska. That would be one way of getting a pound of priming powder. I believe it would be legal on the airlines if loaded in cartridges.

I can see where the priming charge would be a problem. And Triple 7 doesn't come in FFFFg anyway.

What would be the restrictions on one of us shipping you some black powder?

You not only have state and federal regs, the shippers have their regs also and any volatile substance can get you in deep trouble. You have to declare them when shipped and they may not accept or may contact ATF and turn them loose on you!!!!! So, better check really well!!!!!

Thanks Vint2. I started looking up some of that stuff after I posted earlier and I'm thinking now that it doesn't look very possible for an individual to do. I found a company that ships black powder but they only ship to the lower 48. Let me see, where was that formula to make your own black powder...

Thanks for the information. Yeah, I kinda figured there would be hazmat charges and the Blackhorn 209 isn't all that cheap to start with. I started to order some Triple-7 from Cabelas a while back; that is, until I saw the hasmat fee added--quickly canceled the order. Very Happy

The closest major retail chain to me is Gander Mountain in St. Augustine, but when I asked them about it a couple of months ago they had never heard of it. Of course, lack of real product knowledge seems to frequently be the rule in chain stores, doesn't it?

Once I went into a Radio Shack and asked for a particular value of capacitor that I needed for a project. I was answered with “A what??” Yep, you can always trust those chain store experts…

Thanks for the thought Pumpkinslinger, but it cant be shipped by ordinary means to Alaska. If it could be I would have my dad ship me some from PA. I have a friend who thinks he heard of someone bringing in black powder down in Anchorage, he is going to try to hook me up with him. I may have to buy a case though. I think he must bring it in by barge from Washington.

Can Black horn be used in a "real" smoke pole? You know...The ones that have to be stoked from the front end...
