Very Happy Bushy I'm not really trying to dispute their load info, what they don't say(common sense) is at those velocities and pressures (out of rifles) that there is going to be more barrel wear,or throat erosion, and also that the bullet is probably near molten in flight due to friction when travelling down the bore and friction of the bullet in the air possibly. As for the higher listed loads I have an older copy of the lyman reloading manual circa 1960's that I fondly call the "Bible" for loading data as it's powder weights are a little on the heavy side and were considered safe at that time. However by todays standards are 2-3 grains in many cases over the newer maximum load standards.I have also found that my old sierra book from the early 70's is also above max loads in many cases.

Yes that site and a few others are great sources of information when working up oddball loads,as some are not even in print yet from the bullet manufacturer.Case in point-I was trying to find a load for a 35 gr hornady vmax in .223 reminton,as the newest hornady manual has no reference as of this time. Confused

Whats neat about the sight is they list several loads that I use daily. It's nice to know I'm on the right track...

Handloader managed to get to 5,050fps with his 22-250. Smile

If I posted that velocity with a 22-250, it was my error. It was done with a 220 Swift and 35gr Bergers. Obviously, it was only an excercise in velocity and that load would serve no practical purpose.

Sidenote: computer programs haven't been verifiable for me with several of the prairie dog rifles we use. Specific to the 204 Ruger, when the wind comes up, it is affected moreso than the Swift in the 500 yard+ ranges. We confine the 204s (several of us use them) to the 400 yard and less ranges and it is a delight; the lighter recoil allows the shooter to spot the shot. Specific to coyotes, the heavier bullets of any of the popular 22 centerfires have been more reliable and consistent. The 204 will kill coyotes, of course, but, there has been a wound factor with it that has prompted us to go back to the 223, Swift and 22-250s.

I get 1464 average velocity from my 140 grain bullets in a six inch 357 Mag. using 19.1 grains of H110. That is .4 grains under the max load in two of my old manuals. When I got the new manuals I called and emailed Sierra to find out if the powder had been changed or if the specs had just been down loaded because of new data. After a week of talking back and forth the guy admitted that it was because of the cheaper guns had some issues with the higher loads. He assured me that with my Ruger I would be fine with the previous loads.

Added comment: I know few firearm owners that actually burn out barrels, unless they are shooting the RUM or some of the Weatherby hypers. Sometimes, though, burning out a barrel is not a priority issue and, when it occurs, gives the option of rebarreling with better quality or different twist rates or chamberings. I have a first year Ruger No1B in 22-250 approaching 8,000 rounds of loads approaching max. Minor errosion. My several Swifts get into the higher pressure ranges as well and are still on their first barrels with thousands of rounds downrange.

Proper shooting technique goes along way to avoiding premature burnout. Allow a good cooling time, for example. Handloading gives options of powders that promote barrel life, too. Good handloading techniques can prolong brass life considerably even with high pressure loads.

Gosh: it would be amazing if I really could burn out the barrels on half the rifles I own before the inevitable end of days.

It is tough to find prairie dog towns or ground squirrel colonies that have the 'target rich' environment necessary for barrel burning.
