Catching a 36" long Pike sounds fun right??? What about when a 54", 44lb pike decides to eat your 36" pike???

Man those things are huge and mean!!!

These are some great pics. Pike, one of my favorite to catch. Get quite a few of them around here in the 40" plus size. 54" is truly a giant.--tr

Never fished for Salmon have you Dimitri...Most fish will eat any other fish that's smaller then it no matter whether it's his son or cousin...
I've had a seven to eight pound salmon on when a 15 to 20 pound salmon bit the seven pound salmon's tail (and about 2 pounds) right off before I could get it in the boat...

I've fished for salmon, they do eat each others eggs I know not the same as Pike though, still never seen a salmon go after a live salmon. Shocked

Last fall (last September) while salmon fishing:

Morax,

Salmon die after they go up the river and spaw so I'd imagine Salmon don't go after their own fry. However pike do. Smile

Nope males too, once the salmon stay too long in the river they liturally start to die off, if you go later in the season in the rivers you'll start to find fish that have already did there bussince and from a nice color like the one I'm holding in the picture they start to become a pail white color as they die and have no energy left in them. Smile

How do I know this you might ask, the pail white salmons have no fight when you get them on your line, you can just simply real them in, and I'm the one that "field dresses" the salmon (I normally clean the inners and remove the head to be cut into steaks at home) and the egg and sperm of the pail white ones are empty most of the time (I guess sometimes they don't find a mate fast enough). Smile

I got to admit though I tend to not go after the ones that have been in the river for a longer time for many reasons, the main one is the meat isn't for consumption at that point in my opinion when it looks white not pink anymore. Yuck

I got ya (understand what you are saying).. i was salmon fishing a loooong time ago and the female that i was around when it was caught was full of eggs, we went back to the car with her and emptied her out into a coffee tin, and then made some ummm, cant remember the term, sacks i guess you would call them, with like 10-15 eggs in a plastic strainer(almost like a nylon stocking), tied it off and put it on the hook.. so is this also why where they are prevalent you get the bears down there early season, when the fat/egg/sperm content of the fish are high?

Yes, best get them early season when they are still healthy Smile

Also there is probably a technical term for the "nylon stocking & eggs" combo, but I just call them egg sacks. Its also called spawn which is another way of saying a bunch of eggs. Smile

Demitri: We've always called them spawn sacks, or nylong mesh bags. Freedyf

Salmon or fish eggs are called "roe" and you mix borax with the roe then put them in your wife's (girlfriend's) cast off nylons cut in squares and tied off around a trebble hook. The roe needs to be stored for a period of time before use.

PaulS...Did I get that right. It's been a while...The last King (Chinook) that I caught was in the American River in 1995 and was a 35 pounder...
