New member here, I have several encore barrels and reload for them, so I am not new to reloading.

However, I am unable to locate any data for reloading the 45-70 for the Encore.
Barnes suggested starting with the minimal load for the Ruger 1 and that is probably where I will start unless someone can point me in another direction?

This is a rifle barrel, not the pistol barrel.

Thanks

Several major load manuals contain .45-70 data specifically for the T/C Contender/Encore, and the MRI BFR is specced to handle the same pressure levels. Plus, according to their makers, the .45-70 load listings in the Lyman, Sierra, Hornady, and Speer manuals for modern-strength .45-70 rifles are also within pressure tolerances for these handguns.

Try these places............ I hope it helps.

By the way......... welcome nvhntr. Smile

Hello nvhntr ! Very Happy
Welcome !!!
Haven't been here in quite a while.
I'd question Barnes suggestions.
Well. there's three catagories for the 45-70: Trap Doors,1895 Marlin, and
Ruger# 1.
This is to separate the pressure capabilities.
I am able to do only the Trap Door and 1895 Marlin loads. Don't have a Ruger # 1.
In nearly any reloading manual, these 3 is, or should be there.
Be sure to check your manuals first.
My advise is to NOT use the Ruger #1 data. These are very potent loads.
And not very far from the 458 Magnum.
I'd suggest the Marlin loads.Start low and work up.If too much recoil, then use the Trap Door loads. That's a lot of lead comming out from that barrel.
Also, do not go below the starting loads.
Just a short time ago,I stripped down $100.00 worth of factory loads.
Crazy ? Not really. Last December 5th,UPS came with an 1884 Springfield Trap Door. The loads I'm re-doing,is for either of my 45-70's: the 1884, and a NEF HandiRifle.
The bullets and powder is being replaced with 400gr Speer,405gr lead. The powder is American Pioneer Powder,2F.Even though the powder isn't smokeless,I still can shoot these loads with milder/more comfortable recoil.
When I run out of A.P.P., the it's GOEX 2F blackpowder. For hunting bear,I would NOT hesitate to use those BP/sub loads. These loads, even though
low pressure, still can get the job done.
I am doing these, as I can use any ammo, in either rifle. With less chance of blowing up my newly aquired 1884.(more of a safety issue here)
I do wish you luck with your 45-70.

nvhtr,
Welcome to the forum. I do not reload for the older BP versions of the 45-70. I only reload for the #1 or Siamese Mauser. The Encore is capable of handling pressures found in the 300 Win Mag without any problem, so just about anything in the mid to mid high range for the #1 should work just fine. I would be real cautious about aproaching max #1 loads in the Encore. However, most single shot rifles like the #3, Encore, BF, TC, Handi, etc. suffer from one major flaw when it comes to the 45-70, light weight. The 45-70 in a modern single shot or bolt action, with near 458 performance will deliver recoil that is to most folks at least unplesant.

I would go with the data from Barnes, use the #1 starting data and work up.

One of my favorite loads in the Siamese is 59 gr of 2015BR under a 300 Rem HP for 2262 fps and .75 inch groups (shoots same in all of my guns). This is a very plesant load. My max load for the 300 and 2015 BR is 64 gr so you should have plenty to work with. H-4198 also shoots well at around 56 grains for 2327 fps. You should start at 52 gr and work up, my max is 60 gr. R #7 also work well in the high end 45-70 loads.

With the 45-70 watch for pistol cartridge like signs of pressure, sticky extraction. Most max loads will not flatten the primers, so be carefull.
Hope this helps, best of luck.
Ed

Yep, my adventures with the 45-70 caused me to buy a Lead Sled. Best $120 I ever spent. When you get to the 458 levels with the 45-70, using the Mauser, it shortens your bench time up considerably, without a means to modify the felt recoil. Smile But, my joy with the Led Sled reached a new level when I finished the 458 Lott gun. The Lott delivers a whole new dimension to felt recoil and self-abuse. Very Happy Very Happy
