Speaking of loud guns.Yesterday I was punching paper and another shooter was standing about 50 feet from me when I let go with the first round. The report was so loud to him that is startled him and he dropped his model 94, 30-30. I let him know I was going to be shooting my 7 mag., knowing it can surprise anyone not wearing plugs or some form of hearing protection. Right after I fired the first round he came walking over to me and told me what happened and admitted he had no idea what a 7 mag. is, in referring to the cartridge or its sound projection. I felt real bad that he had dropped this really nice 94 that was actually a collector gun. Apparently he hasn't been around any of the high power's that really rock your world. I gave him a pair of ear plugs so he wouldn't do additional damage to his hearing or his gun. I was surprised he wasn't wearing any while shooting his 30-30. Personally I won't shoot any firearm without protection. Gobbuster

Question! My Son is currently in Afghanistan and will be coming home in April. he really loves the outdoors and hunting and wants to buy an nice rifle when he gets home. My Wife and I want to surprise him with this and want it to be something special. My question: Has anyone heard any negative stuff about these new carbon fiber rifles? Are they more expensive than a traditional steel firearm? I'm not concerned about the increased recoil because I"m going to put a mercury tube in it. My main concerns is the accuracy, look, and durability of the weapon. Another question I have is reloading for these new concept materials. Will they take the high velocity loads normally used in a steel chamber/barrel?
In closing I want to say thank you and Merry Christmas to all those currently serving our country in the name of freedom. If I could buy a special gift for each of you I would. I don't think I can even imagine what it would be like to live without the libertiy and justice we have in our beautiful USA thanks to all those that have fought to ensure our way of life over the past 2 centuries. Its so easy to take our freedom for granted with only history to remind us of what it took to establish and keep.
God Bless All of You!

Carbon Fiber barrels do seem like they'd do a fire job on a rifle. However they do come at a price (way more then I'm willing to spend on a firearm), you can even select the rifle action, stock options etc to have one made up by Christensen Arms if you'd like.
With a properly bedded and blueprinted action I'm sure it would be a fine precision rifle.

Carbon fiber is a generic term of a whole lot of carbon atoms (in the thousands) in long molecules like graphic execpt instead of the chains bonded in sheets like graphic they are bonded in tubes together.
But like graphite its properties can be different depending on the specific bonding etc of the carbon atoms. So comparing one carbon fiber to another is not really all that possible from how I understand it. Especially because many carbon fiber materials are plastics that have been reinforced with carbon fiber.

Well pure graphite is pure carbon, and diamonds are also pure carbon in their truest form, we are made up of carbon as well.
Carbon can be a interesting material.

The bores are steel. There is a thin inner steel barrel wrapped with the fibers.

Yup Roklok the bores have a steel liner. Wouldn't want to shoot a gun barrel made out of carbon fiber with no steel liner.
