Bushy,

I normally get up at 4:45 or 5:00 am every morning, even on weekends.

I work on the ranch before I pull my 8 hour environmental science job, then it's back to the ranch to work until after dark.

That's my normal day. I normally work all day on Saturdays and Sundays. There's always something to do around the ranch.

This weekend, though, I'm taking it a little easy. I volunteered to man a booth at the county fair for Farm Bureau from 3 to 6 in the afternoon (Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I'm on the board of directors of Farm Bureau). That'll be an easy Saturday afternoon.

I normally get more done by 10 am than most people get done all day, except maybe for Vint, I think he's a worker.

Yes, I have to drive 45 miles to my job also.

Cary

If I had a "paying job" I might get up at 0500, but I'm retired. Remember? The horses can just wait until the sun is peaking over the ridge. Yup...Fed, checked the water, dunged out two stalls, grained them and spread hay for them...

Yer jist lucky I've had me second cup of coffee...

I know some people that equip their dogs with all the needed protection, but down here, most don't.

Hog hunters in this area used half blood coon hounds to find and trail the hogs, then turn their catch dogs loose. The catch dogs are normally half pit bull and half some other breed. It's a dangerous blood sport. In this area of the state, there are hundreds of thousands of wild hogs and most farmers are willing to let the hunters come in anytime to help control them (because of the damage they do to crops). Ranchers, on the other hand, treat them like game animals and let hunters in for a fee. There is a big market for trapped wild hogs for the hunting leases down here. The news papers in this area continuously have ads where people are wanting to buy hogs from hog trappers.

Same sort of thing over here mate...the hunters use dogs to track, grab and hold the pig, then they go in with the knife or spear.

The pig dogs over here all wear heavy leather breast plates and broad collars...sometimes covered in metal studs for extra protection. Check out this website for more info/pics. Check out the knives in here too.

Pig Dog Supplies

If and when a dog does get carved up by pig tusks, then its not uncommon for the owner to sew it up himself.

Back to topic...I'm not normally one to take a long shot...since I've got a little bit older my eyes are getting worse, and although a scope helps, I am not prepared to take a shot at an animal that I am not sure in my own mind that I can hit, and kill, cleanly. For my long range shots I'll murder coke cans and other assorted paraphernalia.

Cheers, Vince

Vince,

Down here, hog hunters hunt with dogs. Once the dogs catch the hog, they are sometimes killed with a knife. Larger animals are dispatched with a large bore pistol or rifle.

I was hunting wild hogs, with dogs, in one of my 200 acre corn fields when the dogs ran up into a herd of about 20 javilinas. The hog dogs (catch dogs) react the same with the javilinas (as they would with a regular pig) and ran up to grab grab them. The only difference with javilinas is that they are quicker and don't leave a fight. In fact, a sqeal from one, will bring all of the herd back to help. My friends five dogs were fighting for their lives. We ran into the fight and each time I felt meat touch the end of my pistol barrel, I pulled the trigger. In the thick corn patch, there were no shots where you see an animal, aim, and fire. You couldn't see them past two or three feet.

The dogs had huge puncture wounds that were gushing blood. We had to rush them to the vet to get them sewed up. Two barely made it.

The longest shot was a little over 600 yards.

Cary

closest? I would creep to about 3 meters away from a mob of goat then I run right into their midst and SCREAM "BANG BANG BANG BANG!!!" I have done this repeatedly all over Australia.

With a deer, I got to about 5 meters away -- I also didn't shoot it because the deer have a huge rack so the meat must be very tough.
My wife do not let me keep dead animal's body parts at home, so I let it go with a good scare "BANG BANG BANG BANG!!!"
I done this in Glen Innes on a property owned by "Wild Harvest" NSW a few years back,
The fellow who were with me (he also didn't shoot because he got his already, and you got to pay extra $400 to shoot another one) dreamt about the deer so much that he ended up charter a plane for over $3500 to go back to find that deer. He didn't find it still.

HAHAHa Very Happy

I dont have to kill them to prove that I can..

Hey there Dawggy...huntin' hogs with a knife or spear is pretty common out here. They say you don't have to be crazy to do it...but it sure helps if you are. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Laughing Laughing Laughing

My "shot of shots" well, two of them actually...a coke can at 220 measured metres, and a mouse, standing unsupported, at 15 metres. Tapped him right in the centre of the nose with a .22 Power Point HP....laid the scalp (top of head, ears, strip down the back and tail) on the wall behind him...the rest of the mess was all tangled through my son-in-laws fishing lines hanging on the wall. Yuck Laughing

Cheers, Vince

Closest? 10-12 yard kills on whitetail does. Closest encounters were a whitetail doe at 8' and a couple of bucks at 20-25'. On all of these occassions I was on the ground, not in a stand. I have had them walk almost directly under my stand, I could have touched them if I'd been lower.

I sneak up on them...

I am with you bushy - I can make the long shots with a couple of 400+ yard coyotes under my belt but taking a deer with a handgun at 75 feet is pretty satisfying too. Most of my coyote kills are under 100 yards.

maybe we should start a shortest kill shot thread.... anybody hunt hogs with a bowie knife?
