Handloader, I just had to comment on this old post regarding the 30.06 and 180's and agree with your data.

I shoot the now discontinued Barnes blue XLC 180. And like you, have attained 2903 fps (24" barrel) with 59.0 gr. of H4350. I didn't like 2" groups so I backed down to 2800 fps and get 5/8 to 3/4" 5 shot groups every day.
With FPS like these and a super premium bullet, I feel I don't need a 300 Mag. If I felt I needed more "power" I'd step up to a .338 Win.

Hey, how has the 327 Federal mag sold?

We sold a few SP101s and two Taurus in .327 Fed, but, the buyers are not too pleased. We chronographed their revolvers against a Ruger Single Six in 32 H&R and against a Smith in 32 Long, and while the .327 Feds were with shorter barrels and the others in 4 5/8 and 4", there was not a lot of velocity difference. For the past six months we have not received any .327 Fed handguns and I am of the opinion that they are DOA.

Now, for relevancy to this thread: I finally obtained a strain gauge! Expensive sucker. Retesting the data on the '06 will begin in a month or so, but, its challenging because the stain gauge system is difficult to switch easily from rifle to rifle. I'll post when I have data.

I've been working up some new loads for my son's 300 WSM. The 165 SST's shot very well in it. Working on some 165 Accubonds now. As far as being all that it was cracked up to be, maybe, maybe not. But it seems to be a very accurate round, and not a bad choice at all for big game hunting. I know quite a few people that shoot that caliber, and none of them have any complaints about it. I'd say, it will probably be around for awhile. Just another great choice in a big game caliber. Smile

moose2: its great to have choices and I'm all for it. The 300WSM is the most successful of the series of short mags and has acquired a rather loyal following. Why not? If it is as good as an '06, it is plenty good for most anything in the Americas or Africa. FWIW, the old '06 is second only to the .375 H&H in African game cartridge popularity. If it is has any advantages over the 06, so much the better.

wow this was a very hot topic
my good shooting buddy has just sold his .270wsm after trying to get the sucker to shoot good groups for 12mths he gave up. this guy is a super padantic reloader and can really make a rifle tick. he has a tikka t3 .243 that shoots tiny wee groups that he bought at the same time so that made it even more frustrating for him .
he has brought another tikka t3 in 7mm remington magnum which is really funny to me because he sold one a A Bolt to buy the wsm in the first place.
I will stick to my std .270 thanks but this talk of solid copper or guilding metal projectiles has got me thinking that after I have used up the 90 odd 170 grn speers I have (that should be in about 70 deers time) I may try them but at 1 deer every 6 mths or so I wont be holding my breath.

I wouldn't blame the cartridge .......... more than likely a bad barrel or an issue with how the gun was assembled.

Not all guns leave the factory a shooter !!!

Too much speed-envy!

Makes me wonder how my ol' man ever did what he did with that ol' .280 he had from up close to way out dropping stuff in the PNW like sacks of taters- plop!...or with the .30-30 he had before that!

How ever did them ol' farts do it with such slow and inaccurate clunkers! Laughing

wtf Nothing wrong with a little extra speed Stovey !!!

The problem is most don't realize where and when it's needed !!! Confused

Personally I like what the newer cartridges have to offer and wouldn't hesitate to buy one ..........should I ever have use for one.

I've actually been considering going to a .250AI simply because I think my 7mm-08 is bigger than what I need.........

Im not blaming the cartridge, I just think its really funny how he has gone full circle. what is even stranger to me is the lack of need for a big cannon, as much as Im not a'. two for free' fan with the accuracy he is getting from his I would be quite confident to take longer shots with a heavyish projectile no hesitation.
