I have long been fond of Savage Model 99 lever action rifles and was saddened when they were discontinued. The prices of these classic rifles keeps going up. The local gun shop has a .300 Savage with rotary magazine for way too much money. Last Saturday, I was in another gun shop and saw an older .300 Savage with rotary magazine that was drop dead gorgeous. Someone had fitted a recoil pad to the rifle and that lowered the price a bit. I chatted with the shop owner and got a significant discount and brought the rifle home. Years ago I picked up a set of used RCBS .300 Savage dies cheap and picked up some brass at the range. I mounted Weaver bases and rings and a 4X scope. I am looking forward to shooting this fine old rifle. Anyone else out there like the Savage 99? All the best...
Gil

I agree with you, they are a fine rifle and its too bad they were dicontinued. About 5 years ago I picked up a 99A series A .308 Win in perfect like new condition at a gun show.It has the old style slim straight grip buttstock and the scnabel fore-end but with the newer tang safety. I also like the original rotary magazine with cartridge counter better than the later detachable models.

GilMartin: first you admit to liking M71s and, now, to those old obsolete and anachronistic 99s. Well, good for you.

I bought my wife a M99 in 250 Savage. It was used and inexpensive back in 1967 when it was acquired. While we divorced later, the rifle stayed with me as she could't adapt to the hunting mentality and only shot it twice.

I didn't know much about the rifle, either, to be honest. It layed in the back of the closet for some time until I showed it to a friend. He busted this fine rifle before my very eyes and then explained to me that it was a take down version. I had never heard of a take down 99 at the time.

Now this rifle sits in the safe. I have no collector interest in it, so I refinished it (32 coats of TruOil, sealed, stained), recheckered the panels and kept it iron sighted. It gets used once in awhile. My son initially, now my grandson(s), will use it on some hunts every year. This rifle has shown me how good was the M99 and how regretable its passing.

Sweet a take down model. I have only seen one myself. It was purchased by a man at an estate sale. The original owner used it to all over the world. It had a beautiful hard case. In 250 Savage, I guess he used it in Africa and all over the United States. $650.00

Hello,

I have two .300 Savage mdl 99s. Both have a Redfield peep sight and I load the 170 Grain Nosler Part. with RL-15. I have shot lots of Whitetail Deer with the rifle and find it the best handling and natural pointing rifle designed. These guns are getting pricey and harder to find.

Mine are not for sale.

Hi Gil,

My rifle of choice for deer hunting has been my Savage 99R in .300Sav.
I've used the rifle for 30 years and it shoots better than MOA. I think mine weighs about 10.5lbs with scope and loaded, but the weight doesn't bother me when I'm hunting. My local gun shop has a .250 Sav in excellent condition for $1200.

Gil...get ready for some chuck hunting along the Delaware!!

shootist,
Glad to hear about your Savage 99 in .300 Savage. I hope to get out to the range this weekend. All the best...
Gil
