When a naval ship is being built they use a "golden rivet" somewhere in the ship. Usually in the bilges.

When a new recruit comes aboard we ol' salts tell them to go find it.

If you believe that there is a "golden rivet" Have a ball...Go find it.

Usually in the bilges because that's where the stinkiest of the stinky is.

Razz You have to polish all the rivets in the bilge to find the "GOLDEN" rivet because after being coated in the sludge and oil of the bilge there is no other way to find it...

and I was never in the navy Razz Shocked

It’s a bit of a standing joke in the Army of both Pomgolia and OZ. Young naive sailors are sent off to “find the golden rivet” by the old salts after an extended time at sea. Of course this involves a lot of bending over inspecting rivets. Now whether or not this is true I am not sure, but I know I would not be searching for a golden rivet.

Now go back and read the “joke” with this in mind.

I'm sorry Vince, but......Suz is correct. The "Golden Rivet" is normally found in the bowels (bilges) of the ship. You will not be bending over to find it. Instead you will be crawling around in the bilges with a rag and a flash light. And while yer down there if you happen to find any tools that have been dropped down there bring them up too.

And I WAS in the Navy.

Yes mate, I know and understand that...the “find the golden rivet” is simply a standing joke in the UK and Oz.

In the US Navy we didn't "bugger" anyone. If you did and got caught you were either over the side or confined for your own safety until the ship was pier side.

Gone on pub exploring runs with Australian sailors and have spliced the main brace aboard English war ships.
