I was browsing the reloading aisle at the only big box outdoor supplier in town this afternoon. A father told his child (probably around 11-12 years old) to head over to the ammo aisle and grab a couple boxes of .257 Roberts ammo to be sure he had enough for the upcoming season. I heard the kid ask the so-called expert for help, just as I walked in to the ammo aisle. When the "expert" couldn't find any .257 Roberts, he offered the kid two boxes of .257 Weatherby Magnum and told him it should be "close enough". When the sales guy was advised that people get killed by that kind of advice, all he could come up with was "I don't usually work in this area"...

I hate it when that happens. Goes to show that some advice is worth exactly what you have to pay for it. All the best...

And seem to breed in vast numbers.

Elvis,
The only one to blame would be the shooter.
IMO the only person to be in the ammo procurement process is the shooter/hunter.
It avoids the wrong ammo purchase, dumb salesmen, close named cartridges, ignorance (one would hope) and has only one single point of failure.

I see your point, but in what world does .257 Roberts translate to .257 Weatherby Magnum? If he is behind the counter the store should be held responsible. If I send my wife to the pharmacy, the prescription damned well better be right even though I'm not standing right there.

I might understand (but still not excuse it) this if it was at Wally World. The "expert" at WW might have been in the Women's Hygiene section earlier in the day.

To see this happen in a so called "Outfitter" is quite a different matter. I should have collected the Moron's name and gone straight to the store manager, but it seems as though Dad had everything under control.

Elvis does bring up a point I hadn't considered. Had the dad found out he had incorrect ammo when rifles were being loaded on opening morning, there woulda been hell to pay by someone

as long as he had 3 other cartridges for his "roberts" any deer would have been in big trouble anyway.
a long similar lines would be purchase of .22lr but salesman gives .22 magnum.

Ever have some one walk into a gun store and ask for ammo for his 7mm. When asked "Which 7mm?" , the answer is usually "a 7mm." Their eyes start to glaze over when you start down the list, "7/30 Waters, 7mm 08, 7x57, .........."

One Christmas season I overheard a customer ask a salesman if a 94 Winchester was semi- or full automatic.
The salesman replied "I'm not sure, I'll have to ask my boss."

They made a lot of full auto lever guns back in 1894, I can see where the confusion comes from... Wink
