I saw a headline today that said that the US was now "third in infections" in the world. Well, we also have the 3rd largest population. In infection RATE we were about 41st, with 127 cases per 1 MILLION people. The fatality rate in the US is about 1.2%, compared to about 3.4% worldwide. Here in NC our infection rate is 0.003 cases per 1 million people. For comparison; Italy has a rate of 1057 cases per 1 million and a fatality rate of 9.5%. I've read that Italy historically has similar high numbers for the regular flu. The problem appears to be their medical system. www.worldometers.info/...#countries |

My rural county now has the 11th highest number of cases out of any local government district in the UK, despite having less than 1% of the country's population. Nearest hospital is now closed to all but the most extreme (non covid) cases, with wards consolidated & everywhere with oxygen supply converted to emergency ICU. Basement fitted out with racking for hundreds of body bags. No funerals - just immediate cremation & the ashes handed over at a later date. This is far worse than even this old pessimist predicted. |

Seems my company is "essential" so we're working right along. The employees were given a letter to carry in case the local govt cracks down on travel. We make packaging materials for medical and food. The company did give us a temporary raise while this is going on. Honestly I thought that was a pretty nice gesture! I was reading an article a bit ago about "smart things to do with a stimulus check". Buying a rifle is like investing, isn't it? |
