Slimjim,
If that,s the case, then I plan to bring the first grain loads up further from min. load
to get rockin sooner. I will check back later on the 120,s in 01/2017.

Tks.

Vince,
Out of curiosity, have you run tests in the past something like Gel tests or as a example on to shoot through gallon water jugs to determine your best performance workable range on your cast projectiles based on hardness ranges you mentioned 15BHN-18BHN ?

What range of cast hardness if you did do tests, mushroomed the best to hunt with ? If you guys have not done so, it,s no matter, ok.

I want to say here that being a Newbie on this website Forum has given me the most wonderful feeling of kindness and friendship response from you folks more than I ever had on any other Hunting Forum. Unquote.

Gidday mate, no, never tested for expansion as the primary use for the cast loads is cheap plinking. Having said that, I'm sure that these cast bullets will expand nicely given they are fairly soft.

I have done some 'non-scientific' testing with 1oz LEE slugs in varying softness from my smooth ore 12g and I found that shot into a hardwood tree at 50 metres put lead penetrated about half an inch but expanded to almost double its diameter and squashed flat (would be devastating on pigs). Each step up in hardness gave less expansion with more penetration up to pure Linotype that didn't deform at all and penetrated 4" into the hardwood tree. Best part was the group size at 50 metres with mixed slugs was only 4".

For high grade exacting and pretty much exhaustive bullet testing (only on some, but not all calibres), Slim is our resident expert mate. His testing is pretty much second to none and is very informative.

TwoSeventy, I did some initial terminal performance testing of the .277 MKZ bullets. Very impressive, they expanded more than any .308 copper bullet I have tested. Worth waiting for.

I harvested and elk at 200 yards with the 105 MKZ and it immediately went done.

Slimjim,
The MKZ,s sales said they would be in 2 weeks and here it is the 1/22/17.

I may go for the 105,s after seeing your pic,s. They look devastating.

Slimjim,
In load testing, you mentioned spike or flattening of velocity. How do you see this, do you have a chronograph to measure fps ? Only things I can go by are pressure sign,s on cartridge after it is fired. Also your saying that using H4831 with 110 or 120 grain bullets , even 105gr. it is ok l to shoot 60.5 grain load area even if the load book said,s max load is under that.
Basically I would like to maintain fps close to 3,000 and accuracy 4 to 4.5 ****
in bull,s eye area.
I now am also buying some 105 MKZ after seeing your pic,s. That gotta be a blood trail if any squirting a foot wide. Quick death. I just can,t get over how that 105 MHK pedalled out. TS

TS, yes I use a chronograph. The ProChrony I have ($110) has been very accurate and reliable. I have learned you don't know truth unless you have a chrono (how are you going to know when you are 3000 fps and determine your long-range trajectories?). With the 105, you should be around 3500 fps if you want to use the .270's full potential.

I don't remember saying anything about H4831. I use H4895 for reduced loads in the .270. Hodgdon lists H4895 as a reduce load powder for any H4895 load data is published for that specific cartridge down to 60% of max for that cartridge (looking for link). I've actually gone below that but use tissue paper to fill the case and ensure the powder stays next to the primer. I've always heard and witnessed that the more accurate loads are with a filled case.

I hope I get this the right way around...those two powders H4831 and H4895 are AR2213 and AR2206
you CAN use 2206 in the .270 but its not very good and you will need older manual to get data (Ive got it if you need it) cases arent much more than half full from memory.

www.hodgdonreloading.com/

Their website had both 4831 and 4895 listed for the .270. H4895 probably has more loads and calibers listed than any other powder because it was the first smokeless powder Hodgdon sold to the public. From the Hodgdon Basic Manual.

"H4895® is a most versatile rifle powder. This member of the Extreme Extruded line is great for 17 Remington, 250-3000 Savage, 308 Winchester and 458 Winchester, to name just a few. It is amazingly accurate in every cartridge where it is listed in our data. It had its origin in the 30-06 as a military powder and was the first powder Bruce Hodgdon sold to the loading public."

Ok folks,
Reading all your responses.
Slimjim, Sorry about thinking you mentioning in my though,s about H4831. I got H4831 on the brain, . Very Happy Very Happy
I am copying all your replies even Elvis inputs or whom ever and sending them to my printer to further read and keep. You sold me on the magnum primer,s I will buy some at my local gun shop. You are absolutely correct in saying I need a chronograph or I can run along side the bullet on the way to the target to see how she,s flying, . Very Happy Very Happy . I so much appreciate all the tip,s you guys are giving me. You never stop learning.
In my younger year,s I owned a Savage 250-3000 that I would hunt fox with. A hour before daylight I would sit quietly on watch on their known run way patterns. All I did was scare the hell out of them, no scope on gun. I would dress very very warm and go up next to French Creek in my neighborhood farm country in the winter when snow was down and the creek was frozen over. Find me a high spot to see the creek good. Wrap my self in a white bedsheet and wear a white hat for cammo. Did not matter if it was 15 F above or 10F below I just went. The 250-3000 was a hot get um go bullet, I loved it. TS
