They're claiming the m855 is an armor piercing round and it isn't, matter of fact the ATF didn't used to include it as an AP round, but now they do? It's just an inexpensive cost effective practice round from what I can tell.

Is it not so that all these lead-free-bullets are armor piercing?

Oops! Smile

Just love it when the "experts" talk bullet technology !!!

This whole thing seems to be tied to the AR15 pistol platform and the Sig arm brace controversy.

The ATFE already admitted that the M855 round is used in competition target practice more than any other bullet (because of its better BC) which is enough (or has been enough in the past) to exclude it as an "armor piercing" round. It also is not equipped with a hardened steel core. The core is a soft steel core that makes the bullet longer for its weight than a lead core bullet of the same weight.

Barnes needs to make a banded solid in .223 to replace the M855. Although some of the banded solids have been temporarily rated as "armor piercing" the smaller caliber bullets have not. They are available in .243, .25 and up to .600 so adding the .223 should be a no brainer. (although the gun is rarely used for dangerous game they could label it as a target bullet.... Smile

I'm not sure what armor they are talking about this round piercing. I had been under the impression that they were referring to body armor, but they've confused it enough that I'm no longer sure what they mean. All I know is that there's another run on 5.56 ammo of all kinds, not just M855 or SS109. Companies like Cheaper Than Dirt immediately took advantage of the situation and raised their prices. Barring an invasion of Pennsylvania, I'll have enough to last my lifetime.

Maybe.
Probably give the BA your general duties leo wears a hard time, but it wont penetrate the ballistic plate in the military spec BA with the projectiles you have in a 30/30. Youd probably destroy an arm or leg though.

Are you talkin' about the "trama plate" that "mall ninja's" ductape to their chest?

No not the mall ninja variety, although if the plate is the same type that goes in the vest that may work, however shrapnel from the round hitting it will probably shred your throat, job done.
The vest itself can slow down or stop pistol rounds, the ballistic plate can stop 1 maybe 2 rounds in the .308 range.
From the neck up, the kevlar helmet will stop small shrapnel and pistol rounds, probably not a rifle round bigger than .223 if that.

dhc, I have been told that they teach "double-tap"-shooting now. First round to stretch the kevlar, second to penetrate...
so a fast finger will do the armor piercing...
what can be done to prevent 'fast-fingering' ?
