Need an accurate but light inexpensive 22 RF. Anyone care to give me their rifle recommendation. |
I think Stovey is correct, the barrel makes the primary difference. Ammo is secondary but still important. I think hunting small critters at 100 yards will be a challenge with an inexpensive .22LR. How critical is weight? I just modified a Ruger 10/22 with an aftermarket barrel. There are lots of options both in length and weight. Most of these aftermarket barrels will achieve 1/2" to 1" accracy at 50 yards with good ammo. I've had Marlin semi-auto, Remington pump, Marlin lever-action, and Ruger 10/22 & S&W semi-autos. Only the Ruger comes close to the accuracy that the Mossberg target rifles I used to shoot at Boy Scout Camp. I also think a scope with parrallax adjustment would be important.

Vince- I was baffled myself as when I was researching it they all came up 1-12", but, in 2011 then went 1-10" for the 308 Win. So- you were correct! I was sure it was 1-12" till I downlaoded the 2011 brcohure and there it was...geez. Great action and barrel, this one and the Weebee! Howa also engraved the floor plate this year- so now ya dont gettum mixed up in the rack!
Stock issues- the fore end has a ton of clearance, but, the stock is a flimsy thing. I can press the fore end with my hand wrapped around it and it'll easily touch the tube. I'll have to use a gentle touch when cheeking up on the stock so as not to cause it to do that and become a spring when using a bipod. I doubt I'll climb up far enough onto the stock to cause too many issues. Easy fix from Bell and Carlson if there is one. These Hogue stocks are very popular for some reason. I like the B&C's. Either way it's a neat shooter and I have zero regrets and cant wait for trigger time!
Slim- shhhhhhh! I still aint figured out what I'm gonna tell the big guy yet! He thinks the safe is his. Might go soemthing like this..."uh-um, yeh, buddy? Well, yer getting a new little brother, aint that great! And, um....well...I need that bipod a second...." *yoink*

Okay after doing extensive research (At least a dozen beers worth sitting in front of the computer) I went to my local gun store and picked out a nice Savage Mark II BTVS bolt action .22rf. While I admired the rifle I noticed another Savage on the rack a 64TRR-SR. I picked it up and all my beer fueled research went out the window. Now I have a .22LR semi-auto that looks good but I guess I have to hope it will also shoot good. I also picked up a 3X9X32 scope which I will mount tonight. Reviews are mixed but they are on most things.

Beer and firearms just don't mix regardless what side of the border you are on.

yes indeed stovie you are correct. if not you couldnt have a beer with tea then go on the net looking for your next bang stick. all things in moderation. I will have a beer or 2 at duck shooting but wont drink during the day while out shooting, maybe 1 at lunch but no more till guns are put away at night. the scenes of drunkin gallas shooting at everything that moves does our sport no favours and we are trying to stamp it out and change the culture.
