Well I took both boys "hunting" from thursday last week through to sunday.
Had the car packed, picked up the eldest from school, got home for him to change and feed (bloody bottomless pit, I'll be broke by the time he leaves) and out to the car we go. Just as the postman rides by and hands me the approved permit to aquire for my new CZ 550 in .308.
We took a slight detour to the gunshop to pickup the new gat and some ammo and figure out how to fit in the back of the car. WHOOO hoo.
The properties about 2.5 hours away, booked in, talked to the manager for about 10 minutes when the biggest clap of thunder broke up that discussion followed by 30 hrs of solid rain, howling wind and temperatures you only get down in canberra in winter, not queensland in spring. Bloody chemo has shot my tolerance to cold weather to sh*t, I was cold all weekend.
It was doing its best to sleet when we had a break in the weather to sight in the rifle. Friday was a complete write off in the hunting stakes, but the boys got a few rounds down range with the .22.
Saturday dawned fine, bloody cold and with a 35kt (not km) freezing wind.
Went for a drive and a look for deer/ goats, I saw nothing, my mate leading in another car reconed he seen the arse end of 6 departing fallow deer.
We ended up down near a river letting the boys have a bit of a target shoot with the .22 and after enough whinging from both a shot of the .308.
Ever see how big the eyes on a 9 yr old are when he shoots a .308? Hilaroius but no damage done. They both actually did well with the shooting, I'm quite pleased. I gave the teenager a drive of the car in low range for around 4k's on the farm tracks, he pleased me no end by doing exactly as he was told and hitting nothing or removing any teeth from the gearbox.
All in all an excellent boys weekend away.
But wait theres more, I got to go to the range today to finish running in the .308 which I did, early groups are under 1.3 inch with factory ammo.
And to top off a great week the gunshop called up just as I got home from the range telling me my new CZ .22 has arrived, so now Im the proud owner of a CZ453 varmint.
I hadn't bought a new rifle in nearly 30 yrs, I've manage to score 2 in the last week, It doesnt get much better than this.
