Ouch, Dan I hope your brother will take care of those rifles, I agree with Elvis that it's better to keep harmony in the family than to risk it over something like this.

now im with you Dan the .410 is what we call a surviver. the ones Ive seen are in .410 and will take .45 long colt. its a great pity as someone has said before they dont do a .444 marlin/.410 now that would be a weapon to get me going.try some buckshot through it the slow rifling shouldnt donut the pattern too much. how good are the birdshot loads at 15yrds? are they doughnuted?

Omni, he will. he is super pedantic about things like that. He has a 357 auto mag he bought new years ago, and it still looks brand new. and he shoots it often. He did tell me that since his wife and him have never had kids, that they will all end up with my daughters in the end anyway, so thats a plus I guess. Thats where they were going to end up with anyway.

Maybe because he is so over zealous with guns he got the eagles and the grizzlies too. I'm not a big fan of the eagles my dad had, 44 mg and 50 to heavy. But I am in love with the 45mag grizzly. That has got to be one of the best handguns ever. In my opinion.

I haven't noticed a donut hole. This isn't rifled and you cant shoot the 45 colts or the 454 in it. Just a plain ole shotgun. I see that the Wizard single shot has many interchangeable barrels, from 22 to 3006 are available. I like that set up, with the exception of the price. The barrels cost just 40 less than the whole gun new does. I think that is just wrong, but thats me. I could see it if they were 75 even 80 bucks each, but 140 for a barrel for a 160 gun? Thats high. I think.

one thing about the 410, Its been a long time since I shot a 410, but I sure dont recall the rounds being nearly as expensive as they are today when compared to 12 and 20 g shells. They are getting premium for 410s, and I think only Hornedy and Mec make reloaders for it, and they are not cheap either. im guessing its due to the home defense and the Taurus Judge maybe.

My oldest boy bought new last year one of those H&R Survivor series shotguns that do have a rifled barrel. It's a combo 410/45LC and even has a screw in choke for the 410 shell. But one must remember to take out the choke when shooting the 45, so he uses a red sticker on the hammer to reminded him that the choke is in for the 410. When shooting the 45, he unscrews the choke and removes the sticker. It has been a great gun and if I had more room in my safe I would buy one.

I think the red sticker is a fantastic way to get kids to pay attention and learn about awareness and firearms. Thats a great idea really. It instills common sense, and safety awareness, something that doesn't always come naturally . Good for him, and you for doing that.

[quote="Ominivision1"]My oldest boy bought new last year one of those H&R Survivor series shotguns that do have a rifled barrel. It's a combo 410/45LC and even has a screw in choke for the 410 shell.

Could someone let me know how well they shoot. From my recollection the 410 is actually .410 calibre, and not 410 ga. So if you have a .410 cal barrel, how can the 45LC be fired in the same barrel, as I think its .451 or something similar. Are there any pressure problems, or do they just have a 45 cal barrel and shoot the .410 in it.
Not trying to pick any nits, just trying to answer a thought

better don't question the shape and size of calibers... the .410 is also named the 12 mm or the 36 gauge and yes you can put a 45 Long Colt in the chamber, but I still don't dare to shoot it because I'm afraid of what will happen with my choke.

For your info: the 24 caliber and the .577 Snider is a simular thing.

Camel

Yup you are right about the .410 being .410 caliber, which comes out to 67.6 gauge. The H&R survivor 410/45LC has a rifled barrel for the 45 colt and since the base of the 45 colt is .480" and a .410 shot-shell is .469, it will allow the 410 to fire in the same barrel. Not exactly thrilled about having steel shot fired through a rifled barrel but this is a survivor rifle.

Keep in mind it wasn't designed for range but survival. If you can keep a relative fair group on 10-12" target at 25-30 yds, you have a survival deer load, albeit I think more in terms of 15-20 yds. At 25 yds and a load of 5-6 shot most are reliable small game getters. The 45 colts will never shoot great as of the same long "jump", but will suffice in a pinch. We shot 1 box of factory 45 colts and at 20 yards we had groups of 3" to 4", maybe if the gun had a chamber of 2 1/2" instead of 3" the colts might have done better.

But I think for it's intended purpose as a survival gun, it does just fine.

Thompson Contender still makes a barrel for .45 Colt/.410 shotshell with a screw-in choke..

load up and try some buckshot Omni I was impressad with the 3 loads we put through the wee gun the other day.the price of loads has always been an issue so I brought a hand loading kit realy simple by MRC its easy to poke out good looking loads and sure doesnt use alot of components.

I have a 410 shotshell loader, we have steel shot now and can not get lead shot unless you cast your own. Is it different down under with shot?

surely is the good folks at Fish & Game have said lead shot is ok in the sub guages eg anything less than .12ga I can see .20ga being made to go steel too one day. the sub guages just arent available in steel so lead is exzempt.

Found a minus to the Rossi Tuffy 410. Its not as Tuff as you would think. The stock is made of 2 piece plastic, and the screws strip out really easy. Also, its only attached to a tang by 2 Phillips screws, similar to dry wall screws, which just go through holes and attach to the other side of the plastic stock. If your not careful , you can drive the screw through the opposite side of the stock too. However, if you wanted to make a pistol out of it, the tang is perfect shape for an easy pistol grip. But thats kind of illegal in some places.
anyway, I did a lot of polishing and find tuning with files, sandpaper, stones and some cratex buff wheels and my flexshaft , and now this little 410 opens, closes, and shoots like a dream. Hardly any force is needed to flip the barrel open and flip it shut again, and the trigger is smooth as glass now. I wish they made a better stock, or a good after market stock for it, but besides the stock, I really like this little guy. Its my new 4 wheeler / tractor ride along shotgun. Now if it did have the interchangeable 22lr barrels, it would be perfect for the 4 wheeler and tractor gun.
