It just happened, the way many gun purchases happen. I saw a great used rifle that had the right feel and balance and bought it. A Kimber M84, sitting used at a gunstore. French walnut, select grade, excellent condition and a super price, .260 Remington, 22" barrel, 6lbs. Would it shoot accurately?

Yes, yes indeed. I have tried 100gr and 120gr Nosler BTs with two selected powders (H414 & Reloder 19) with sub MOA groups, 5/100 and 5/200. Next, I'll test some TSX.

I never intended to buy a 260 Remington. Now, having about fifty rounds downrange, I can report that this is a fun rifle, mild recoil, accurate and begging to head to the hunting fields, varmint or big game.

No, but I would like to be. It is the equivalent of the 6.5 X55 mm Swedish round , which has been used for verything from mouse to Elephants with outstanding results.
Actually , I think "Karamojo" Bell used a slightly different but ballistically equivalent 6.5mm cartridge to do in his many dozens (hundreds?) of elephants, but I think he was one of the rare super good marksmen every generation produces. He died of old age, in great Britain, not of terminal elephant.

The Scandinavians use the round with its 140 and 160 gr. bullets and pedestrian velocity to take "elk", which is our moose, (or is it the other way around?)

Maybe Europeans are on to something? You did good, rifle and caliber wise.

Another one here. I shoot a Remington 700 Mountain with Detachable Magazine.

I have nothing but good things to say. I can shoot the 95 gr V-Max up to a 140 grain. I use 129gr SP's for deer with great results. My 11 and 15 year olds love it because it doesn't beat them up shooting it yet it is a reliable gun for clean kills.

I am looking for some new loads to play with. Any suggestions?

I also shoot .260 Remington for about 3 years now.Every thing has been hand loads from 85 gr. to 120 gr.Seems like no mater how it's loaded it is right on.I think the 260 is verry under rated.I have never met anyone that shot them that dident like them.The 107 gr.Sierra with a medium load of Varget ia a spoiler. EASY

FWIW, Mine is adorned with a Leupold 2.5-8 scope, however, I will switch it with a 8.5-25 Leupold for some sihoulette shooting. It should be interesting and I believe the bc of those 6.5 bullets will do a good job. If so, it will prove to be a versatile rifle indeed.

never owned a .260
owned a few 6.5x55's and it's the ballistic equivalent to the .260 when used in old actions (m96 and 38's) the x55 can be laoded to a lot better in a modern action with good brass.

Friend of mine that have one used necked up Lapua 243 brass and loads it quite warm in a rem 700.
A very effective pig load is the factory Rem Core-Lokt 120 grain slug at over 2800 fps in either gun. In a good gun 3K fps is easily abtainable with excelletn accuracy.
Another one to look at is the 129 SST and the 123 Scenar.
Woodley make a heavy slug for big game hunting and a friend of mine got a full penetration shot on a Sambar deer (Elk) at 118 yards (lasered) using a load that made 2750 fps. (6.5x55) He missed the front shoulder because of the angle but took both lungs and the offside shoulder out and the sambar staggered 3 steps tops before dropping. It had bleed out significantly by the time he got to it. There was an impact mark in the ground behind but he never recovered the slug.
and the .260 is the ballistic twin of the 6.5x55 but in a short action.

I'm a bit of a 6.5 nut and If I didn't already have a couple of 6.5x55's and another one being built and a .264 WM awaiting FFl clearance and a 6.5 grendel waiting brass, dies and reamer from your side of the pond I would be getting a rem 700 action and a pac-nor 3 groove barrel and building myself a .260.

might just do tha anyway when the others are finished.
