Confused

Oring, They say that the illumination creates a nice bright picture. Now, in the rain, (and chances are it will be raining where I plan to go) my thoughts were that the heavy recticle would assit in establishing a frame of the animal, especially if the animal is moving toward me and angry. Rather than having time to focus and make a clean kill at an animal 200 yards out.

For me, the heavy recticle frames fast, and with practice I should be proficient with it.

Your thoughts?

Walt

10Ring,

I'm not a real big fan of this type of reticle. I personally think it gets to be too confusing when looking through the scope. I guess that I forgot to mention this as being one of the disadvantages, as far as I'm concerned anyway, with the Horace and the Shephard scopes, as well as the Leupold scopes with the big-game reticles Embarassed .I really prefer the standard Plex radicals, or maybe a Mildot reticle.

Shomebigbores,

Being fast and proficient is one thing......being accurate with a (what looks to be) very heavy plex, along with fast target acquisition is another. IMHO there is way too much reticle covering (in worse case scenerio) a charging animal that could make the world of difference in a good clean kill. That type of reticle is not what i would depend my life on, nor with those heavy hash marks either......I know for a fact it would disrupt my accuracy because the focal point is at the plex and not the animal.

Very Happy Very Happy Thanks guys, I'll go back and look some more. I'll take another look at Burris as I think I read that they had the "wide field of vision in a 1.75 > 6 X 30

I appreciate the advice. Now.........I have been in tight situations before so I actually expect to be cool right up to slapping the damn bear in the face when he starts to chow down on me if I miss. (I won't miss, but do want a clean kill even when or if I am being charged.

Off the subject, I hope that if I am charged by a mad mama bear with a cub that the pepper spray turns her.

Anyway, I'm going back to look at Burris again.

Thanks again guys, and Merry Christmas on 12-24-2005.

Walt

Deal
OK guys, This one may be better, and of course more expensive but..........fast dangerous game deserves its due.

I hope this transfers.......what are your thoughts on the Burris 1.75 X 5 Safari.

Walt

Judging by the response so far, the new Signature Select lineup looks to be destined for greatness.

LRS - Lighted Reticle Scopes Very Happy
Centering black crosshairs on a dark or poorly lit target can be a matter of guesswork at best. And guessing where you’re aiming defeats the point of having a scope in the first place.

That’s why Burris developed the Electro-Dot to add a bright pinpoint aiming spot to the center of the crosshair without affecting optical quality giving you an accurate aim at any color target in any light.

And now, you can combine the advantages of the Ballistic Plexâ„¢ in a lighted reticle scope for connecting at long range in any lighting condition. For more close-in shooting and dangerous game, nothing is faster and safer than the LRS Fast Plexâ„¢ and the LRS line now includes the popular standard plex.

LRS and Electro-Dot scopes work great even in daytime by quickly getting your eye on target in dark timber.

Optical quality is unaffected by the electronically lit reticle and, if you should find yourself without battery power, the reticle shows up like a jet black standard reticle.

So, if you’re after black bear or Russian boar, waiting in a blind for lion or leopard, or setting out for some after dark varminting, a Burris LRS can light the way

Now, depending on what you want and see that would pertain to your needs is what you should go with. Personally (again) strictly dangerous game, the LRS FastPlex would be my first choice because the design draws your eye naturally toward the center and in one area. Ballistic plex would be good on longer range and distance judging shots, but IMHO, not as efficient as a FastPlex. Or the respective non luminated reticle in a taper Plex.

I have used other scopes and base my findings on what i have actually used, however, i've never went DG hunting but on my old 338WM it was topped with a Burris Fullfield in 2-7x35 and i have taken bears with it but nothing above that. The other Burris scopes i've used were on long range and tactical applications. This is where i was able to to try and shake the lighted reticle loose on a nifty fifty, and between the lighted Ballistic Plex & Mil Dot, Plex & Plex Illuminated, and Dot, i've had flawless performance.

I have owned a few other companies scopes and still i stick with Burris because i was let down many years ago by Leupold (twice) and therefor they lost me as a customer (leaking scope and reticle turned).

I will say though to stay as far away from Zeiss as possible!!!
They DO NOT AND WILL NOT warranty scopes in America! Mad

Hope this helps Very Happy

Thanks everyone. I am leaning toward the Burris and lrs fastplex.

The reticle is the only item I think I have to determine yet as I will also use this for other game out to 250 yards.

Thanks again Oring for all of your experience passed along.

No prob Shomebigbores Cool And because of the design of that scope, 250 would not come into factor as being any trouble.

Take care and let us know Very Happy

Showmebigbores,

For a big ole 'punkin-roller' like that Marlin 45/70, I concur with the most of advice you've received up to this point...but, having eyes of similar vintage to yours, I know I can't kill what I can't see, so I prefer as much light in the tube as possible...

That means as large an objective lens and tube as you can practically fit aboard...

When you add in that 'CF&D' rider, though, if you do not immediately eliminate the scope altogether, you do automatically say "lowest possible magnification, largest field of view"!

For that reason, I'd go for the unusual combination of 1.5-6X40 mentioned in your list, as almost ideal! It could only be better if available in a 30mm tube(?).

...having said all that, I've just got a 'heads-up' on a reasonable scope on ebay that, while not as perfect as the scope above, might do...item #7208552125...I recognise that moniker "bundypalms", I think I know who the vendor is...PM me if your interested in it ...I might be able to get a few bucks off for you, chuckle,

Ed

I know a few people that have them and are pretty happy with 'em. I have used one of their rifles with on, and for what they paid (not sure exactly, but know it was under $200....local shop clearanced them out) it's one hell of a scope. You should always ask to see and look through the scope outdoors before you buy it though, because everybody is different and what may be good for some may not for others Cool . Hope this helps Very Happy .

I think I am going to try one I sent in a cheap simmons for repair and they called me saying that I could upgrade to another Simmons, Redfield, or a Weaver. The upgrade price for me is 170.00 for the Weaver Grand Slam 4.5x14x42. I looked at all of my other options today on the internet and I think the Grand Slam will be the best option for me. I am putting it on a new Browning A-bolt hunter Field chambered for a 300 WSM. I will let you guys know how I like it when I try it out.

Well I got my Weaver Grand Slam I think I'm going to like it I put it on my 300 wsm Browning. The scope is a little heavy, but I think it is because of the variable objective. The scope is very clear and it looks like it is going to pull light good for those early in the mourning and late of an evening shots. One thing that I like about it is that the eyepiece has a focus on it so you can get it focused to your eye just by turning it a little. You can really zoom in on things too. The only scope that i have that could compare to it at all is a Leopold Vari X-III, which I would say probably is a little better scope.
