Pumpkinslinger, if you're worried about mud-daubers, then you're sleeping too much on the stand.
I too, carry my rifle like Bushy and OV1. It's amazing how fast you can shoulder your rifle. Easier than carrying it muzzle high on the on-side shoulder.

Slim, over the years I've done some decent sleeping in the stand or blind. Once, when I knew I was't going to see anything, I just lay down at the edge of field in the sun and took a good little nap!
I think with the mud daubers the gun was left out overnight. I read it so long ago that I can't remember where I saw it. But it would only take one bug and a little mud to mess up a good gun. Tape is CHEAP.

yip I m with you pumpkin, insulation tape goes on our muzzles all the time. if one of you great range shooters want to try 2 different groups 1 with no tape and 1 with fresh tape after each shot we will know how much it affects accuracy. I bet it wont be too much.

We use finger cots at work, they should fit a barrel perfectly. I'm sure I'll get a condom joke or two. |
Using condoms (or dinga's as we often called them) to protect the muzzle of your rifle is common. But I much prefer your idea of the finger dinga...nice and small and easier to keep on the end of the barrel. Only thing with the finger ones is you don't get them in packs of a dozen like you do with the , ummm, oh yeah, condoms.
As for wet weather gear...I have a jacket and trousers suit of a Goretex type material...works a treat, but it can make a little noise.
I have, in the past, carried an El Cheapo plastic poncho ($2 at Cheap Arsed Charlies) for added protection, and found that if necessary you can throw a belt or piece of cord or whatever around the waist and it helps...a little. I also have a Malaysian Army issue poncho that looks similar to the one in the link Punkin posted...its been good for a few years, but needs a little waterproofing now.

Wet weather I use an "Outback". I also keep an Army camo poncho in my pickup for those days when it wasn't suppose to rain.

Do you guys have any recommendations for water proofing treatments? I can't find anything that works. What I've found is spray on stuff that is supposed to be used on nylon rain gear that is breathable. I don't think "breathable" is working. I've tried a couple and they flat don't work. Doesn't seem to be anything else out there. I had a guy treat my beaver felt hat and I don't know what he used (he soaked it, then dried it, and couldn't shape it right but) it works pretty good. He's long gone now though, or I'd ask him.
please please I want my old poncho to work

Scotch-Guard Outdoors is what I use on my old cotton four man tent.

Ok I'm stickin with the Bushmeister on this one. I never thought of Scotch-Guard.....have to look for some. If it works on a tent, I bet it works on a poncho. Last night I did a search of the internet for a new poncho, found several sites that all have the same ponchos. I think I can sort through and find a poncho that works for me.
I don't go for the Outback stuff, too heavy and too warm to wear and too just-got-off-the-horse looking. I think you have to walk a certain way to wear one too. Thanks for the links though, it was educational. They use a sort of wax for water proofing, I've seen riding slickers with that treatment and they're stiff as a board when they're not in hot weather. It's a nostalgic thing to own one I think, not a comfort thing. Filson wax...that's one I've not heard of either...Hhhmmm
Vince get off the -I've got to pee -thing ok? You just want the visual anyway.....boys....
Let me find a corner

You got it TRBLSHTR. I got the "barrel down" carry from a two time Nam Marine Vet. Particularly handy in getting the rifle into action quickly.

What visual Suz ? Have no idea what you are talking about.
Saw plenty of those "visuals" when I was doing security in Sydney some years ago...people that were too lazy, or drunk, to look for a bathroom.

EEEeeewww Vinny! I saw a video once where this lady was squatting in a rather public place and this old man came up and kicked her. She even laughed at him. Alright that's enough of that..
